HARVEY BARRACKS

KITZINGEN, GERMANY

Formerly part of the United States Army Würzburg military community, it was a 1st ID garrison since 1996 and prior to that it was home to 3rd ID 2nd Brigade. Originally built in 1917, the installation served as a training school for German pilots in World War I. The German Luftwaffe used the base a generation later to train the pilots of dive bombers and pursuit planes during World War II. The Americans took control in April 1945 and used it as an air base until being turned over to the 1st ID in 1947.

  1. I was stationed at Harvey barracks from 1971 to 1973, as an MP. It was a great time.

    1. My Dad was there from 1961-1963. He has been talking about it lately. Is there a book that I could get? That would have lots of pictures? He was in the 3rd Armor Division and drove a tank. Thank You! Carol Wood Southers

      1. Ms. Southers, My grandfather, CWO2 Richard F. Rouser, was also stationed in Kitzingen, Germany. Though, I’m unsure of which Barracks – Harvey or Lawson. He was assigned to the 1st Medium Tank Battalion (Patton), 68th Armor, 3rd Division. He was there around 1958 to January 1961. Unfortunately, I’m unable to help you, but thought you might have some information about my grandfather’s unit. All I know is from a ceremonial beer stein with the unit’s information. Our ancesters were the greatest generation. God bless.

    2. Hello John. I was stationed at Harvey Barracks from October 1970 to December 1971 (66th HEM Company). I was supposed to have been stationed at the 116th Ordinance in Nuremberg but my MOS (27B20) had no vacancies, so I was cross trained as 41C and ended up in Kitzingen. No doubt you and I probably crossed paths at times. I spent most of my free time at the Hi-Fi Club across the road. Did you ever go there? Do you remember the food truck that came to the barracks selling spaghetti and I think pizza? Hope to hear from you, hope you’re doing well.

  2. I was here as a child back in the late 80s. My father was in the army. Does anyone recall a mural painting the basement of any of the buildings depiction a battlefield with tanks and soliders and an angle. I’m here now trying to recant old memories. I was 5-6 at the time. It would mean allot to find this old painting. Thanks.
