HANAU, GERMANY
Argonner Kaserne, named after the Argonner Forest, scene of the famous WWI battle, was constructed between 1937 and 1938 and occupied by the German Army Engineer NCO School. German Army engineers used this kaserne for their non-commissioned officer school for many years. An interesting sight in this area is an elevated stone wall on which a huge tree is still growing. It was a former gallows used to execute convicted criminals and enemies of the state in the 19th century.
The kaserne is now split into two parts, Old and New Argonner. Old Argonner is home to the 414th BSB command group as well as a number of MWR facilities. New Argonner houses the U.S. Dental and Medical Clinics as well as family housing. Argonner now houses Medical, Dental and Veterinary Services, a guest house, government housing, and both Hanau Middle and Hanau High Schools.

We lived in New Argonner from 1958-60, when our Dad was the US Army Aviation Advisor to the German Army.
In Feb of 1960, he assumed command of the 503rd Aviation Company, which was based in Hanau, and we moved there.
I was very young, born in 1954, but I do have some memories. I recall that the Engineers built a bridge over the lake on a routine basis, seemed like they were doing it all of the time, but surely not. We could watch them from the windows of our residence.
Lived there 1953-1955, when I was 9-11 years old. Loved it. Still remember several childhood friends from the barracks that I sometimes wonder about.
