THE FORMER FORT ORD OF CALIFORNIA

Fort Ord is a former United States Army post on Monterey Bay of the Pacific Ocean coast in California, which closed in 1994 due to Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action. Most of the fort’s land now makes up the Fort Ord National Monument, managed by the United States Bureau of Land Management as part of the National Conservation Lands, while a small portion remains an active military installation under Army control designated as the Ord Military Community.

  1. I WAS STATIONED AT FORT ORD FOR A.I.T. BACK IN SEPTEMBER 1973 TO NOVEMBER 1973. WAS GLAD TO GET OUT OF THERE! MY FOLLOW ON ASSIGNMENT WAS FRANKFURT, GERMANY 🇩🇪 !!! THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PLACES WAS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. NEVER BEEN BACK AND FRANKLY NEVER WANTED TO GO BACK. I FOUND THE POST TO BE BORING AND DULL. ONE OF MY WORST POSTINGS DURING MY ENTIRE CAREER!!!

  2. I did basic there April and May 1970. I was in B-4-1. I went back a couple of years ago and was saddened to see the state it is in.

  3. Did basic training in 1971, less than a month after turning 18 right after high school. Was a FNG. Volar training which was supposed to be really easy compared to the regular training.
    D53! I remember a Captain Lingham?
Drill Sargent Wood. He was the mellow one.
There was also an Ayo, Lee, Blount, and one more that I can’t remember.

    I was a skinny runt kid, 110lbs!
There were 16 guys from Hawaii in our company. By coincidence I also saw two more high school classmates on base. Couldn’t believe it. I wish that I had kept in touch with the guys from the mainland I met. Danny Garcia, apologies, Did a lot of stupid stuff then.
    Still do.
