Honefels and Graf and border duty and dealing with the officers of S-3, some of them OK and some of them real A-holes. Spent a lot of time at Moms drinking beer and eating cheese schnitzel. We prefered American beer from the PX and playing cards late into the night. We did go through more than a few cookies of hash, but always did our job and were at work the next morning on time. Spent about eight months in the attic of C-troop when they re-habbed the barracks-colder than hell up there. Remember Col. Dozier, was a General in Itatly when he was taken hastage-hard core all the way. Partyed down with the guys in commo and the motorpool, a good bunch all. The motorpool guys helped me when I wrecked my motorcycle-thanks guys. As for the MP’s-wasn’t trying to screw anyone that night-the German Police had a better hold on things then you bros. Hope all of you out there that spent time there are doing well, except the jerk that stole my civey boots when he went back to the world. Ist Cav was one crazy outfit in the early 70’s.RICHARD.: I WAS THERE WHEN COL.DOZIER AND WE MOVE TO ANOTHER BARRACKS.I HERD THEN ENTRANCE TO UNDERGROUND MOTOR POOL WAS THE SWIWING POOL.THERE WAS GERMAN TANKS STILL DOWN THERE. |

I loved the downtown park in the spring. We took the train to Nurnburg a lot and had to hike back to O’Brien because we were always broke. What happen to O’Brien? I wanted to play guitar and jammed in the service club. The first band was called salt and pepper with me on guitar SGT cox on vocals Smith on drums and Coverston on bass, we covered R and B and Grand Funk songs. It seemed every time we got some material down someone would ETS or transfer. I ate cheese schnitzel a moms, drank Tucher and some other rot gut that came out of the vending machines. I had a friend from Czechoslovakia who worked at the snack bar, a young kid named Michael. I bought encyclopedias from Derek A Fullwood. Jammed with John Smith, and Snuffy and Take Five once. when Bobby Barry and the Wild Ones were playing the NCO club the bass player’s mother in England passed away, so he left for England. My buddy Rick Coverston said he could fill in for the bass player but asked them to let me play too, so for a couple weeks we played oldies. my first trip to the wall, someone told me that I must take a camera. That was a mistake the old german guy’s with peg legs were chaseing me yelling, “kiene photographeirt”, one grabbed my mamiya 1000 dtl and threw it on the ground and stompped on it. I finished a Vietnam tour in December of 1970.Hoping to get a stateside assignment, I was greatly disappointed to get another overseas assignment. I ended up at O’Brien Barracks in January of 1971. I was a medic attached to B Troop.Looking back now, I feel fortunate to have been sent to Germany rather than stateside. I have a lot of fond memories of my time in the Schwabach area. And I got to see a lot of the Bavarian countryside out of the top of a medical track vehicle.2/4 Cav was part of 4th Armor Division when I first arrived. I believe the Division was at that time commmanded by George Patton III (son of the WWII General). Then in the Spring of 1971, shortly after I got to Schwabach, 4th Armor switched over to the 1st Armor Division (Old Ironsides). We changed shoulder patches and life went on.I got an “early out” from Nixon in March of 1972 and went back home to South Dakota where I still reside.I served a total of 2 years and seven months with two overseas tours. O’Brien Barracks, contrasted to Vietnam, was Heaven. |

As a 76C, I worked in the old motor pool office located across what was then the C Troop building that had a yellow/stucco exterior. A lot of new construction was going on then, a new mess hall, and two new motor pools, one for the CAV, and one for the ADA, not to mention all the street construction. As with any new and first assignment, you always remember your first supervisor, and mine was SFC Ronald Counts.Since I was assinged to HHT, I had the privilage to see a lot of Germany, and even traveled down to Venice with the troops. My favorite times were going into Nurnberg with friends for dining and sight-seeing. I also enjoyed the Kontact club that meet in the recreation building.I departed O’Brien Barracks on June 17, 1987, what a summer day, 49 degrees and raining, and I’ve never been back. I have a lot of precious memories of my tour there, and I’ll never forget all the friends I made. O’Brien Barracks was turned over to the German government in 1992 and is now O’Brien Park. Someday, I hope to go back to O’Brien with my wife and stroll down memory lane with thanksgiving, and think of those who sacrificed as I did, over twenty years ago. |

Great times! I’ve been to O’Brien since and saw that they had a museum. Some parts of it were of the town of Schwabach, but a decent amount was of the military facilities and units there. Very interesting! Schwabach is MUCH different. Downtown marktplatz looks run down and sad. |

SSG Romero i remember some. the funny part of your post is that SGT baynes was in my platoon and he was then a SP4 promatable. him and i had an incident once that got us both extra duty and then to make things worse they put us together as a team. but actually that worked for the better, we both ended up respecting each other more. i should have got into more trouble than i did due to the fact i made a racial slur towards him but our XO had heard so many sides to the story that he felt we both deserved to get the punishment. |
