November 2007 00:10 Host: cache-mtc-af15.proxy.aol.com I was a medic in HHC 16th ENG.Bn. from Nov. 1984 untill Oct 1986(ETS).I made some good memories and great friends there.Havihg had my own APC in Scweinfurt spoiled me, so I always hated bumming rides with whichever company I was sent. Usually on a dusty old supply deuce.I used to think “Deussenhaff” was a german word for truck!LOL! That is untill I got a license for one and saw it written for the first time. I got my Spec. Five pinned on me right there in the street in front of HHC. Then at PLDC in Ansbach it got changed to Sgt. stripes.Ansbach had the very first Burger King to open on a military post anywhere in the world and I most definitely enjoyed it! I totally remember running along that freezing canal @ 0darkthirty. I was always afraid that someone still drunk from the night before (or a couple hours before)might slip and fall in. Yeah,I was a medic, but I couldn’t swim! The german beer-farts were the worst part.LOL! Yeah, I got alot of memories from JB, but the best are of a girl in the 42nd Amb Co. who stole my heart and I’m not sure I ever got it back. If anyone remembers me email me. I’ll write back. CATAMOUNT! |

It was the beginning of my 32 years in the U.S. Army and I too have alot of fond memories of the place. It was sad to see the transformation that has taken place at what use to be Johnson Barracks. I have recently started looking up individuals that I served with and have been able to locate 8 people that were also assigned to “Delta” Company. Maybe a reunion could be in our future plans. |

I ran across this site by accident, like so many other guys have, I suppose. It has been very interesting and a little heart warming if I can get away with using the term, reading many of the comments, especially from those who were there during my time. I was stationed at JB from 81-82, with the 16th Engineers, B Co., 3rd platoon, I believe. It’s been a long time, and like the old barracks, a lot of my detailed memories of that old place have faded. What remains, are the faces and the places I visited and the time we all spent together dreaming of getting back home– to the world on that freedom bird. I had 14 months left on my enlistment when I got orders to Germany. I left Fort Hood, Tx and the 1st Calvary Division and ended up at JB on Memorial Day weekend. I can thank the Army for reminding me of this each year on one of my favorite holidays of the year! As a replacement, many didn’t trust a Spc4 coming in with only 13 months left to serve. I guess they thought of me as a member of CID. And I guess some where a little envious that I would be going home in just over a year. I couldn’t believe some of these guys had served there together for three-four years. JB was bitter-sweet. Thousands of miles from home with the WARSAW PAC Armies just miles away and the occasional banging on the door early in the morning from the CQ yelling, “Alert!” Do any of you remember the barracks being haunted? How you would be walking down the hallway to the latrine in the middle of the night to take a wiz, and sense that someone was behind you and when you turned around, there was no one standing there in those hallways that looked like they were a mile long. Or how when doors would just suddenly slam shut on their own? Part of the the barrack’s mystique, I guess. From time-to-time, like today, I think of that place and those I served with, like Eddy Savage from KY, Pringle from FL, Joel from California, and so many more guys who will always be forever young in this old soldier’s mind. God bless every one of you!
