BAD AIBLING STATION

PHOTO FROM JACK MINDEK

The former Bad Aibling Station (BAS) has officially been designated as 18th United States Army Security Agency Field Station and a.k.a. Field station 81, or Hortensie III. Currently it is a satellite tracking station operated by the German SIGINT agency Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) from nearby Mangfall Barracks in Bad Aibling, Bavaria.

  1. /Stationed at BA 1968-1970. Heard rumors about a tunnel into town, maybe even to Rosenheim. Was able to crawl into a hallway under barracks (forget which one, furthest from main gate) through a below ground level window. Saw a large tunnel closed by a heavy old steel gate, floor to ceiling. Looked large enough for a car or truck. Unable to see into tunnel. So a tunnel to somewhere does exist. //SP5 Ian Friedlander, 05D20

    1. I know of tunnels under the antenna field. We found an old Luger and some WW2 shells, that maybe somebody was using as a target range during the was. I lived in the 181st, the barracks farthest from the gate, but we never found any tunnels there. It is now an office building.

  2. I was stationed there from 1966 to 1968. I lived off post but was in “C” company and I worked in what was the Hanger. Many great memories!

    1. Hi John, I am a committee member of the Herzo Base reunion group. I don’t know if you have reunions, but we are looking to have joint reunions in the future due to declining membership. If you or someone you know would like to talk about it, please let me know. Thanks much,

  3. I was there in the late 80’s. I remember the view looking into the Alps. I sure made some memories there

    1. I lived there 4 years in the late 60s, 311 A1 as an army brat. Are there any photos posted of the service club, family quarters elementary school I attended? I once had a photo of the Alps taken from the Service club patio over the M Hill that featured The Sleeping Beutie Moutain Range. Clearly showing the outline of a woman laying at rest. I wish this could be recreated. I made every day of four years a rambunctious exciting adventure. One night i, a nine year old was picked up and taken by the MPs to the guardhouse for questioning. A soldier whom tried to collapse my snow cave on top of me was trapped and injured in the entrance with snow packed inside the back of his drawers that was kneed and punched into his bunghole. When the MPs took my statement one got a headache banging his head on a cabinet in a back room trying to stop laughing, the second MP flipped out of his chair laughing uncontrollable. Then the third turned red and lost his voice laughing. The last thing he said was “Can you walk home?” I left as they rolled on the floor laughing 🤣😅😂😭

      1. John, I just came back from a visit to that area. I was stationed in BA station from jan 1958 to Sep 1959. I have a picture of that mountain, the sleeping virgin. If you want a copy, email me at 1oma-opa@mchsi.com, and I will send you the picture. My name is Dave and I loved every minute I was stationed there. I even met my wife in the Rhumba bar in town. Let me hear from you.

  7. Omg! I was stationed there when I was in the Air Force. Never took any pictures because it was such a gloomy and depressing place. But I did love Germany, had a great time my 3 years there.
