BISMARCK KASERNE

Schwäbisch Gmünd

From 1963 to November 1968, the United States Army’s 56th Field Artillery Group, equipped with Pershing missiles, was headquartered at the Hardt Kaserne along with A and D batteries of the 4th Battalion, 41st Artillery. Headquarters & Headquarters Battery then moved down the hill to the Bismarck Kaserne in November 1968. Family housing and the commissary were across the street from the Hardt Kaserne and overlooked a hill above Bismarck Kaserne.

Schwäbisch Gmünd

Schwäbisch Gmünd is situated within the northern foothills of the Swabian Jura Mountains on the Rems river, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of the state capital Stuttgart. The municipal area comprises the localities (Ortschaften) of Bargau, Bettringen, Degenfeld, Großdeinbach, Herlikofen, Hussenhofen, Lindach, Rechberg, Rehnenhof-Wetzgau, Straßdorf, and Weiler.

  1. My father was there I think in 1968, part the the 7th army. last name Wheeler, if anyone remembers him please reply

  2. My dad was Keith D. Henson and he was an MMT with the 4th and 41st from 1963-1966. We lived in defendant housing in Hardy Karen and I attended 4,5 and 6th grade at the elementary school there. We spent many a night at the movie theater there!

    1. I WAS THERE AT BISMARK 5/OT THE 73 SARGENT MISSLE REMBER THE THEATER VERY WELL SGT JOHNSON RAN IT

  3. I did not know your father but was one of the projectionists at the Rodman Theater during my time in Germany 1972-1973. I was not aware of the significance of the naming.

    Sorry for your loss.

  4. My father, Captain David Bruce Rodman was stationed at Bismarck in October 1964. He was the Firing Platoon Leader with D Battery, 4th Battalion, 41 st Artillery. He was later killed in Vietnam, May 8, 1968. On Memorial Day, 1969, the Bismarck theatre was dedicated in his memory. Would really like to hear from anyone who was there and remembers my father or the dedication. Thank you.

    1. Amy, I was in D Battery 94th Artillery 4th AD in 1964. I believe at that time the 41st was stationed at Hardt Kaserne, not Bismarck.

The 94th was a Self propelled battalion consisting of 3 M109 (155mm) batteries and 1 M101 (SP 8inch) battery. It was one of the first units in 1963 to received the new M109 and M101 equipment.

I was stationed there from October 1963 until February 1965. I was in the Special Weapons Section of D Battery.

      Hope this helps.
