BREMERHAVEN, GERMANY
The main focus was on the handling of consumer goods and military equipment for troops stationed in Germany. The property – initially known as the Staging Area – was given the name Carl-Schurz-Kaserne in 1973. At the time there were stationed in addition to units of the US Army and United States Air Force and United States Navy.

I was stationed there from January 87 to December 91 at 69th trans! Best times of my life. Except running around perimeter road in the wind, which was basically every damn day! Miss all the memories!

581st Sig. Mos, 36H20 ran & maintained the telephone exchanges behind the MP’s and at the U. S. Hospital. Best duty station ever!
Do you have any pics of the hospital? My son was born there and would like to see. It appears the building no longer exists.

Who remembers walking up the dike for the first time during November’s gale force winds and nearing the top of the dike to see the waves crashing against the dike almost spilling over the top of the dike? It was an eye opener for me, I didn’t know until that moment how small I was with the North Sea being held back by a 150ft dike that if compromised could have completely wiped out that part of Bremen.
With clam winds and the appearance of the sea receding from the top of the dike you could see the decaying WWII bunker about 100yds out. Yes, like a fool I walked down the dike and out onto the jetty to the bunker to have a giant wave almost bury in the North Sea.
I remember it. My school class (4th grade I think, around ‘88-I went to the DODDS school down past the stairwells by the Y center and a little church was out front) went on a field trip there to fly kites! Total chaos and freezing lol.

That was long before the digital age! Thank goodness my memory survived because of all the pictures I took of Bremerhaven, and my tour in W. Germany, Belgium, and Nederland, the only ones I sent my mom exist today, and who knows where they were stored after her passing. Do you have any pics from those days?
I was there from 81 to 83, assigned to 581st Signal Co, and later to 39th Signal Bn. Walking on the Kaserne you thought it was raining with the wind blowing the water over the dike. My wife was so small, she would take one step forward, and the wind would take her three steps back. I had to literally carry her sometimes while the wind was blowing strong.
Really enjoyed the assignment. The American German Fest was the highlight of each year. The 39th Sig sponsored the American ice cream booth.

Did you work at a site like Sögel or Co. HQ and BN? The winters were great from Flensburg to Garmisch!
No one believed me after returning to the world, that if you slipped in Bremerhaven during a blow after a overnight freeze, and if you didn’t know how to surf, you were going for a ride on your backside. We laughed at the rookies, and felt bad too, but that was part of living at the bottom of the dike. I have great memories of the European continent, but I love being home more.
I worked at CO. Hq in supply. I went up to the signal site in Flensburg a couple of times…

Small world. Mitchel and were in college together. I was a year a head of him. However, we both landed in the 39th sig BN. Now we are neighbors. We were here for almost a year before we realize we stayed in the same sub division.

I was stationed in B’Haven in ’65,’66, and part of ’67. Lived in a barrack on the quad at first and it had a Swastika built into the bricks on one end of the bldg. I was a CTT with Naval Security Group. Eventually married and lived “on the economy” in Langen with a German couple in a new modern house. Liked B’Haven and Europe and have been back a couple of times. Also was a volunteer disc jockey on weekday mornings on AFN. “The Navy’s Voice in B’Haven.” Navy sucked, but Germany was great!
lol AFN. As a kid I hated AFN except on Sundays when they played Kasey Kasem top 40!
Was in Germany for 9 years. Loved Casey Kasem. It touch me when he passed.
we also lived in Bhaven from 63-66. Loved it there. Sad to think the Staging area is gone

LOL, my older brother is retired Navy. Also my neighbor in the government housing was the Navy Admiral’s daughter there, married to the Army’s MP commander. She loved loud music just as much as I did. We had a ball… Not alot of US military there anymore, but I hope to go back in the future.

I was there from 83-86 (MTMC) and I never heard of any reports, stories, tales, rumors or even conspiracies of any such thing on the Kasern anywhere. Nor did I ever see any such behavior which would resemble what the emblem stood for.
I vaguely remember one of my co workers mentioning the swastikas. However, I never took the time to go look at it. There was also the rumor about the cross burning near the dining facility. Took many trips to Cuxhaven. The night clubs there were off the chain.
I played in a Little League World series divisional playoff game at Bremerhaven in 1965. Was on the team from Bonn (US embassy). Do you know if that was the same base wherein you nwere stationed? I remember that they put the teams up in the barracks.
I loved shopping at the px and electronics store there in the 80s, also cant forget radioCity and the movies, funny 3 months after I got to my duty station i was sent to Bremerhaven for head Start, well I had deutsch girlfriends and yugoslav girls, and learned to speak read rite, translate in proper deutsch which was awesome.
I was stationed on Carl Schurz with the 176th PSC 1978 – 1980. It was the best assignment of my career (23 years). Always wanted to go back to visit.
Wow, I was also station in the 176th PSC from 1990 to 1992 in that time it was changed to 176th PSB. I loved Bremerhaven!!!

I lied there from 1983-85. I was with the 606 TCS USAF.
I was stationed there during desert Storm 90 to 91 I was attached to the military command northern Europe. I also stayed at the Army hotel located next to the Army hospital. Great pl
ace would not hesitate to do it all over again. Looking for people from that commmand.
We lived in the “stairwells” right behind the “gast haus” you stayed in. Me and my friends used to walk home from school and cut through the hotel and buy candy bars from the vending machine. And right across from the hotel on the other side was the O Club. And then on the other side was the Army hospital my mom worked at. I loved how everything was so close but still in the middle of the local community.
I was assigned to the 67th signal battalion as a mechanic and Capt. Gerald Street’s driver 1982-1983 . I met a american girl who’s father was a big wig engineer . They were a wonderful family . Best 2 years of my life

I was stationed here from 83-86. I worked at the Vehicle Processing Center all 3 years ( when I wasn’t gone working in special operations supporting NATO Operations at one of the other Shipping Ports in the NATO Theater of Operations). I arrived as a Specialist 4, was Promoted to Specialist 5, then later the Specialist 5 Rank was permanently Retired and I lateraled to Sergeant. I left in 86 on the Staff Sergeant Promotion list and the Army had reassigned me to the Recruiting Command as a U.S. Army Recruiter. Of all of my Army Assignments in the U.S. and Overseas… Bremerhaven was my favorite, most loved and most productive. I also was a Member of the Bremerhaven Community Basketball Team ( The Port City Players) and we were Conference Champs 2 of the 3 years that I competed with the team. So many fond memories of Bremerhaven that I’d have to write a book to list them all. 😁❤️
I was there 1983 to 1987. I managed the BX Wedgwood shop. My husband was USAF at Wanna. I agree those were great times. I am still in c I n tact with Major. Jegliewski from the hospital. I remember Sail ’86 when the tall ships came and the Fest when the US sold American ice-cream. I miss those times and people.

I was stationed in the 72nd EOD from 86 to 88.
I was transferred from the 636th Ord Co. EOD to the 64th MP Co in Bremerhaven in 1979. I then spent my last 4 months in Bremerhaven at the 72nd while I waited to return to the U.S. for NAVSCOLEOD.

We were talking about you a few years back. I don’t know if you remember Casey Melton, James Simmons, Covington all EOD and lived on the 3rd floor. Casey drove the Blue Benz. Oh yea, and dated Kathy. Who actually is here in the states too! I ran into her in Norfolk and we’ve kept up since. We are all on FB together along with Claudia/Andrea and a bunch of the other German Ladies we know who are all in the States.

Wow, you really take me back down memory lane. I remember all of you guys. Melton’s blue benz we call the Batmobile. Claudia and Andrea were sisters and I can’t remember their female cousin’s name that they ran with. I think there were about 5 Claudia’s I knew back then and a few Martina/Tina. I ran into Andrew Griffin years ago on a military base in georgia(2004). I hope all as well with you and would like to join the Facebook group.

Yea, man it’s a bunch of us near each other, Melton in DC even though I’ve been home a few times I haven’t had the chance to catch up to him, His Kathy is in Va, Me/Simmons/Watson (Not sure if you knew him as he played on the Basketball team with us) in NC, My Claudia is married and is in Austin, Her sister is married back in Bremen, Their cousin married Parker and live in GA (Parker died before I found that group), Cov’s Cathy is in Germany still, not sure if you remember Sarah, Melanie, Larisa & Christina (Sarah is in NC too) and the others are in DC & we’ve all hung out together a few times with Watson who happened to know my brother for 20 years before I finally realized we knew the same person “lol”. Crazy how we’ve all run into each other.
I’m not on Facebook much since I stopped working in politics but Melton has a side FB group. Add me “Franklin Freeman, Huntersville NC” It’s a picture of my granddaughter on there.
I think the last time I talked to Grif he was just coming back from Alaska & I was station down in Norfolk Naval Base not knowing Casey & Kathy were both there too…whew so long ago.
I really missed a lot, it’s cool that everyone could link back up and hang out!!! Currently i’m living in the Philippines as an Expat. I was part of the Passport Bros movement, I obtained a SRRV Visa, it’s a retirement visa that allows me to live here permanently. The US dollar goes far. Just like the days of the Mark when we were in Germany before the Euro. I will look you up on FB.

Both parents were there in the exact same time period. Both MOSs were medical. Miss those days
