ERNIST LUDWIG KASERNE

Darmstadt Germany

The Ernst Ludwig Kaserne on Eschollbrücker Straße, which no longer exists today, was built in 1937/1938 for the Wehrmacht. It served as accommodations for an infantry battalion and was named after the last reigning Grand Duke Ernst-Ludwig of Hesse and Rhine (1868 – 1937). It was surrounded by forest. The barracks area had been laid out as a rectangular complex with a central square. After the Second World War, the kaserne was taken over by the US Army. The U.S. Army stationed the 94th Engineer Battalion there. The kaserne in 1992.

  1. Hi All

I was at ELK from 7/78-1/80 in 94th Engr HHC. I started in C company and was transferred to HHC to be the Batt photographer. It was the best years of my life. I still miss it today. I drove the Roach Coach that brought the food and beer around after hours.

Great times and fun with the troops.

    1. Hi Berry,

I arrived at ELK in Darmstadt on Friday December 13, 1991. Was assigned to the Maintenance platoon in Alpha Company. Was with the Battalion during the move from ELK to Rose Barracks in Vilseck. We left ELK in early October of 1992 and by the end of 1992 the entire battalion had left ELK. HSC, Bravo, and Charlie Companys where at Rose Barracks. Alpha Company ended at Hoenfelds. I had a blast during those years, made some amazing friends some of which I still keep in touch with. Who was your Company CO? I served with LTC Michael R. Pelkey in the mid 90’s who had been the CO of Delta Company during his time with the Battalion. Our Battalion Commander was LTC Berry N. Totten and our CSM was Julius B. Nutter who later ended being the Post CSM at Fort Leonard wood in the mid 90’s. I attended his retirement ceremony at the Engineer School house in summer of 1995. I was a 62B.
