FLIEGERHORST KASERNE

Fliegerhorst Kaserne in Erlensee (formerly Langendiebach), Germany. Was a US Army base and Army airfield in Germany from 1945 to 2007. Among the units stationed there was the HQ and A Company, 122nd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Armor Division.

  1. I was there: Army Brat, 1969-71. Amazing base, especially the German Army/Airforce “leftovers”. I know the rumor was there were 7 underground levels there; I know of 5 ‘cuz’ us kids used to roam through the first 3. “The Word” was that the lower levels were flooded (and booby-trapped) when the Germans abandoned the base after WWII – flooded it, using the same water system they used to flood the base to disguise it when the Allied bombers would fly over it; then drain it. That’s commonly known history, BUT . . . those underground levels. I *wish* I had the resources to take a underwater ROV & see what’s under there. You know the Germans. They were mothballing for the 5th Reich or whatever when they shut it down. The rumor mill also had it that the last German who knew where the water came from, and where all the boobytraps were, died being interrogated in the hospital, refusing to give the Allies a word. The Army, bless their hearts, tried pumping it out, but . . . with that intake pipe, and it’s source and location unknown – they failed, though they *did* get the first 3 levels pumped out. I know I remember standing before the big steel door. It was all dewed with sweat from the cold water behind it. (Or at least the officer with me said that.) We toured the ‘underground’ a good bit; loved the shooting range the Germans had built there. Spent a LOT of time around that base; in the bunkers, in the German canteen a few times, and a LOT of time hangin’ in the hangers. My dad was a CWO-4, sooo . . . lol. I got a lot of freedom & a lot of training, including off-base, running with ‘you G.I.’s’, having been given instructions by the instructors back at the hangers to “foul them up” in any way we could. Even got some espinage type training! XD “Everyone trusts the kids”. The proudest moment for MY group was fouling up a tank manuvuer so bad the Army commander attacked himself, with his own tanks. NEVER believe the kids 😉 – especially when they’ve had a peek at your maps in the APC.Also learned how to aim/fire the minigun on a Huey Cobra there, when I was 12. As the officer said, standing next to the cockpit (it was also when I discovered to my amazement A) the pilot sits in the BACK seat, and B) the HUD!!! cool . . .) – said;”When the ‘balloon’ goes up your parents are probably gonna be gone and most of our pilots dead. WE’RE just a speedbump to hold up the Russians long enough to get a counter-attack goin’ from hom. WE’RE gonna need _some_ of you kids to man the guns while the pilot flies you around, and I want you to be familiar with the aiming and controls . . .” – and he & another ??? showed me. A pilot, I guess. I wasn’t much into noticing rank back then.Wonderful times. I even gotta blog (Which is how I found THIS blog post!) describing my . . . shall we say, ‘unusual’ times with, in, and around the military! Thanks for your post. It’s good to hear about the “old-school”.

    1. I heard the rumors of the flooded levels and there was an airstrip there too. I was there 73-75

  2. Was stationed at Fliegerhorst Kaserne twice. First time Feb 82 – Aug 83. Graduated as a UH-60 mech. But no Blackhawks were there when I arrived. Became a UH-1H (my favorite acft of all time) mech and learned how to do sling load recovery of downed acft. Second time was AUG 87 – Nov 01. First as QC for UH-60A&E mds, OH-58 A&C mds, and UH-1Hs in Service Company 227th Task Force Viper. Then became QC and UH-60 crewmember trainer in Hco 227TH Task Force Viper. One of the best units I was lucky to be assigned to. Being stationed in Germany was some of the best times I had in the military. Really miss the place and the people. Not just my fellow soldiers, but the community too. Made a lot of local friends while stationed there. Sad the place is closed down. I left there shortly after returning from Desert Shield/Storm. Most of the people living there will never know how so many Americans, far from home, performed such an important duty that impacted their lives till this very day.

  3. I was there from 1994-1997. 2-501st Avn. We were a Blackhawk lift unit. Had some good times there. Almost made it into the underground hangars.

  4. 334 Attack Helicopter Company, 1972-1976 (45M20) Great Company and many Great Memories.

    1. Was a 45M a armament repairer. When I was in we had 68M Attack Helicopter Weapon Systems Repairer and 68J Attack Helicopter Fire Control Systems Repairer, this covered the AH-1S Cobras from the Mods, Prods, ECAS and MZ airframes. I was stationed a Feucht AAF outside of Nuremberg in AIR TRP, 2nd ACR. The Air and Cat Troops combined in ’84, to give us HHT 2nd Cbt Avn Squadron, 2nd ACR. Then in 85 the 2nd CAS split up even more to give a HHT Trp, Avum Trp and different Troops for the Attack troops and utility helicopter Troop
