KITZINGEN, GERMANY

Formerly part of the United States Army Würzburg military community, it was a 1st ID garrison since 1996 and prior to that it was home to 3rd ID 2nd Brigade. Originally built in 1917, the installation served as a training school for German pilots in World War I. The German Luftwaffe used the base a generation later to train the pilots of dive bombers and pursuit planes during World War II. The Americans took control in April 1945 and used it as an air base until being turned over to the 1st ID in 1947.

In 1956 I was sent to Ft bliss Texas then out to White Sands to help fire 5 corporal missiles I remember Colonel Crow (As the Crow flies) he bought Beer for the troops after hitting the target 5 times in a row. Then off to Germany, went to Germany with the 557 FA missile Battalion
I worked 6days a week 10-12 hrs. a day repairing the radar, antenna and van, was confined to the base for 30 days to get the equipment working, I also did the IG inspection of all the Corporal Radar Vans in Germany from Kaiserslautern to Ansbach that year I was one of five enlisted men picked to take the test to go to West Point. never made it.
I was stationed in Kitzingen Germany from Feb. to Dec of 1956 lived in the flugplatz control tower the building is still standing and my room has been located using google map I hope they never take it down

My name is Spencer Barrett…..The son of an E-9 in the 35th Engineers/Kitzingen. We lived in Army provided housing and I still remember liking it there. I am 75 yrs. old and the time I spent there was in 1955-1957. Fond memories, but seeing all the bombed out destruction in Wurzburg was somewhat depressing.
I was stationed there between 1968 and 1970 Charlie company, Como chief.

I was stationed there too from feb 68 to aug 69 as charlie co. como chief. 1/64th armor. Were you with the 1/64th or 3rd inf? Just wondering. I don’t recall your name. Were you como chief after aug 21 1969? That’s when I rotated out.

Hi Spencer trying to help a friend find his biological mother. His dad was stationed here in 1957 when he was conceived. Did the maids live in the barracks with the soldiers or service them? I am thinking his mother could of been a German maid servant. My friend’s dads name was Gilbert Aragon if you might have known him. Thank you, Brenda
