HERZO BASE

HERZO BASE HERZOGENAURACH GERMANY

Herzo Base was built in the 1930’s as an airfield for the German Air Force called the Luftwaffe.  Their mission was to train pilots for the Luftwaffe.

At the end of World War Two the ASA moved into the kaserne in 1947.

The kaserne is no longer open.  The place was turned back over to the German Government.  Most of the older buildings have been torn down.

This part of the website is being built to provide  former and present military personnel and their dependents that were once stationed at Herzo Base at Herzogenaurach, Germany a place to get in contact with each other, their German friends and share their comments and  photos.   Herzogenaurach residents and the people of the surrounding area are welcome also.

“Herzo Base may be gone, but we can keep it alive with our stories, photos and by sharing our memories”

  1. Hello, I was stationed at Herzo Base from 1981-83 C Btry 3/37 FA 210th Bde. Have great memories of this place. I remember going downtown Herzogenaurach every payday and buying either Pumas or Adidas sneakers and sweat suits. Great beer and schnitzel! The ugliest part of it was going to Graffenwoher, Hohenfels, Wildflicken and of course the dreadful Chechoslovaia border patrol.

    1. I was there from mid 82 thru 84 and was assigned to SVC Btry 3/37 FA and worked in BN Maintenance section. Had CW2 Berry, SFC (daddy mac) McMahon and if you were a gun dog then I most likely pulled your pack on either the M110A2 or the M548A1. Great memories of the corner bar, Marthas, (who made the best food in Herzo) the disco Santa maria and the gray cat. All got plenty of my money back in the day and wish I could even re-live those times. Colonel Granrud was the BDE Commander, and I looked him up a couple years ago and he had passed away in 2020 I believe and obtained the rank of LTG when he retired. Fun times for sure.

      1. Herzo Base Alumnus,

Its always interesting to hear about the folks that followed us to Herzo Base. I was a member of the 318th ARMY SECURITY AGENCY, the second occupants of Herzo after the German Luftwaffe. Many of the ASA Team worked on Base in a highly classified compound and others of us preformed our duties out on the East German and Czech Borders. Many of us worked out of mobile huts or 292 vans and only returned to Herzo for resupply or reassignment to another border location. When working the border. we lived in Hotels that were generally inside the 5K Zone. That means with a few exceptions that we were the only GIs living and spreading GOOD WILL with the locals. All of it was a life altering experience and I wouldn’t change a minute.

The ASA Vets from the 318 are having a reunion in Nashville next week. Some of us are getting “long in tooth” and regretfully this may well be are final party. I consider all of that bunch to be my family and I can’t to see them and share some booze and stories about our lives at Herzo Base.

Respectfully, SSGT James Chrz, 64 to 68

Some friends were Bennie Rennick (sic) from Oklahoma and the memory is fading. Recall walking to downtown Herzo and going often to a Sports Club restaurant that was run by an Italian family. Great food, beer and foosball table.

I was there approximately the same timeframe. Anyway, I’d enjoy visiting with you on line. Jim , Florence,Alabsma

  10. I was assigned to Herzo base 1972-1975 first to 210th FA GP HQ then to ATAB, Wife and I lived downtown Herzogenaurach APO 09352 the last year of my tour. Retired from military rank 0-3 from the USAF. 1979-2003.

  11. I was stationed at Herzo Base From August 1979-1981. Assigned to HQ 3/37th FA, PLL Clerk 76D. Great memories! I would love to hear from fellow Soldiers who May remember me.

  12. I am the daughter of someone stationed at Herzo Base sometime around 1963. He got his discharge that year to return to Missouri, USA, to join my German-born mother, who had flown on ahead to meet his family, carrying me. I would be so grateful to communicate with anyone who knew my father back then. His last name is Pugh.

    1. Hello, I did not know your father but lived at Herzo at the same time. Like you, I was a daughter. In 1964, I graduated from Nurnberg American High School.
When we first arrived at Herzo we actually lived in the BOQ (Bachelor Officer Quarters) because that was where my father had been living as he went overseas prior to my mother and I going. That was so I could finish out the semester at my stateside high school.
After the BOQ we moved to an apartment downtown Herzogenaurach. It was right across the river from the swimming pool. There were peacocks at the pool grounds and I remember them “squawking” in the summer.
Our third home at Herzo was one of the two actual houses on base. The Col’s family lived in one and we lived next door in the other.
One of my favorite memories of living there was at Christmas time is of the loud speaker playing Christmas music that you could hear all over the base. Add the huge goose flake size snow and it was a fairytale Christmas scene.

My days at Herzo were pretty regimented. We few kids from Herzo got on the school bus quite early in the morning. The bus would drop off the jr hi kids in Erlangen and then we high school kids would continue on to Nurnberg. At the end of the day we high school kids went directly to Herzo (usually in the bus but sometimes in a staff car if there were only a few kids….usually arriving at the gate just in time to have to wait for them to take the flag down.

As you can read, my memories are those of a teenager, not of a responsible soldier like you dad must have been (after all, he was selected for the ASA).

I hope you find some people who knew your father.

  13. Enjoyed Herzo’s hospitality and many little towns along the border. I remember working hard , but playing hard as well. Fond memories there and with the many ASA soldiers I had the privilege to know and work with. 64-67 Staff Sarg Jim Chrz

      1. Sorry I did not. Spent the majority of my time out along the border doing God’s Work

  14. I was stationed at Herzo from May 1964 to July 1967. Worked with computers. We never knew from one moment to the next if we’d still be alive, as the Russians had our base zeroed in.

    1. Hello, I was at Herzo, from 75, to 78 2/377th FA, S4 section, POL Specialist, And CIF Top Man! I 😍 Loved the Black Soldiers, Men & Women that made this post what it was, In those years! Fond Memories forever.
