JOHNSON BARRACKS

JOHNSON BARRACKS FÜRTH GERMANY

The buildings that would be named Johnson Barracks were taken by the US Army in May of 1945 and named in memory of Pvt Eldon H. Johnson, a member of the 15th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division.   Pvt Johnson was killed in action June 1944 near Valmontone, Italy.

From 1970 until 1992 The 16th Engineer Battalion occupied Johnson Barracks, at which time the unit moved to Bamberg and like all the rest of the military kasernes in the Nürnberg Area the buildings were given back to the German Government.

Nothing is left of the former Johnson Barracks.  The buildings are no longer there.   The only thing that remains is one warehouse.  The place that used to be Johnson Barracks is now filled with car lots, and other businesses.

This part of the website is being built to provide  former and present military personnel and their dependents that were once stationed at Johnson Barracks a place to get in contact with each other, their German friends and share their comments and  photos.   Fürth residents and the people of the surrounding area are welcome also.

“Johnson Barracks may be gone, but we can keep it alive with our stories, photos and by sharing our memories”

  1. 1958 PRIVATE KEITH BROOKS(age 18) NOW DR KEITH BROOKS I was stashioned at JOHNSON BARACKS 1958-1959 24TH ENGINEER BATTALION . I WOULD LIKE TO CONNECT WITH SOME OF MY COURAGEOUS BUDDIES. THE WERE THE BRAVIEST MEN I HAVE KNOWN. SHARE YOUR MEMORIES.

  2. Staff Sergeant P. Guilmette 12B30 Combat Engineer was stationed at the 16th Engr, HHQ company, Johnson Barracks. S-1 Personal, 1981 to 1984 was responsible for all the men’s records, in processing and out processing, incoming and outgoing mail for the battalion and a lot of other duties, and spent a lot of time in the field. Good times and memories. We had are own EM Club at Johnson Barracks. Spent a lot of time there. Mess Hall was one of the best during my 20 years in the Army.

  3. Ohhh What wonderful memories!! My 1st duty assignment straight out of basic and AIT! Winter December 1978 arrived in Frankfurt, 21st Replacement Center. Stayed a 2 days in Frankfurt then got on a bus on my way to my home for almost 5 years. When we arrived @ Johnson Barracks 16th Engineer it looked old, dingy and run down in my eyes. As we got off the bus in front of HQ it was Friday evening and heard allot of yelling from soldiers sticking their head out the windows. Come to find out later that soldiers were already drunk getting ready for a fun filled weekend!! lol 😀 I enlisted in the Army as a 19E10 and trained on the M60A1 Tanks… Found out the next day during my in process that I was to work on a CEV and a AVLB. I had no clue about this type of equipment only that if resembled parts of the M60 tank. Any whoooo long story short, I later went from D co 1978 – 1981 then moved to E co 1981 – 1983. I eventually learn all there is to know about my equipment. I got married in 1981, moved off post and lived just 3 miles down the road from Johnson Barracks. I love my 5 years at Johnson Barracks. Lots of friends both German and American fellow soldiers. I did some traveling by train and went everywhere. Went to Nurnberg and downtown Furth allot to kill time when not on missions. Traveled all the way to Bremerhaven where my wife was station at until she moved to Montieth to be closer. I made friends with some German locals and still keep in touch with them to this day. Later throughout my military career I again return back to Germany in 1997 to 1999 and was station in Hohenfels. I visited Johnson Barracks just before it was torn down. That day when I visited Johnson Barracks I did not know that the Unit was de-activated and the Kasern was like a ghost town when I stood at the main entrance looking in. Not a soldier in sight!! 😥 The Kasern look much much cleaner because the barracks was all painted and the bullet holes was all patched up!. I later learned the history of Johnson Barracks and its final days of closing. Such wonderful memories… ❤ Johnson Barracks 16th Engineer may be gone but our memories will always be there. Catamount!! Semper Altimo!!

  4. I worked at the snack bar at JOHNSON FROM 1976-79, AS AN AMERICAN CIVILIAN, for the Military.

  5. I was stationed at Johnson Barracks from 1987 to 1989 while I was in the Army. I think we were one of the last ones stationed there. The German Army was going to take it back in 1990 and my unit was going to move to Munich.

I haven’t been there since then. It would have been nice to see it again.

  6. I was stationed there in ‘68 and ‘69 when we were the 24th Combat Engineering battalion, 4th Armored division.

Great memories … ‘tho Grafonver (sp?) was interesting when the Russians went into Prague in August ‘68. We were all busy.

      1. Hey Don don’t know if you remember me but my name is Dean Bugher. I was with you Christmas Eve when we went to Harpers house 12:30 at night to get a free drink like he told us. He came to the door all pissed off because his kids thought it was Santa Clause. Take care Dean

  7. I was in the 16th, 1st ACo, then CCo after I made E-4. From Oct 76 to Nov 79, JB was home. Met a lot of great guys and have many good memories.
SP4 Seamen and myself built the Castle just inside the gate, in front of the building that hosted the Laundry turn-in, Snack Bar, Movie theater and the in-door Recreation. This is where I met my current wife of 42 years in Dec 1976. Sorry to see it has been torn down. Glad not to have to go to Reforger or Guard duty @ Hoff anymore!

  8. was station there 1959 to 1961 it was a old Germen artillery base before we took it over down the rd. from the base was under ground bunkers were they kept ammo & shells

  9. I was at the Johnson Barracks from 7/1971 – 8/1972. I also went to barracks in Ansbach for awhile to do some parking lot and other repairs with my Payloader bucket loader. Don’t remember alot my time their or people I served with. I have pictures I up loaded to the Johnson Barracks web site.

  10. I was stationed at Johnson Barracks from 1978-1980 with the 42d Medical Company(Amb). Any one know what became of the 42d? Any know what became of Mike Spears, chuck elder, terry wesley, Denise O’Bryan to name a few. Great Time in Nuremberg!!!!

  11. The 16th started at JB in late summer of 71. prior to that it was 24 Engrs 4 AD.

  12. Lots of great memories of the 16th engineer battalion. I remember when we would go to the PX and someone would say hi my wife would as “who is that “? I’d say I don’t know, they must be in the unit. As one of 26 cooks in a 1000 man battalion everyone knows the cooks but there’s no way you could know everyone in the battalion….lol

  13. You’re seeing the engineer brigade moved in 1992 to Bamberg. I was stationed there in 1991 where we took over the barracks for the engineers because they moved prior to 1992. It’s been many years ago and I did 21 years in the army I can’t remember the unit without looking at my military records but it was a quartermaster unit

  14. From looking at page 9 of Johnson Barracks things sure have changed. All the GI’s that were stationed there sure remember a different Johnson Barracks. The place is totally different. Not a thing is the same as it was.

If you were to go by there today, you wouldn’t know where you were at.
