  1. kirk warner, I was stationed there 87-89 178th maintenance battalion. Great memories

  2. I was there in the very early 80’s. I was a medic attached to the 130th General Hospital. Had some great times there. Beautiful country, great food and great people. Would love to go back some day!

    1. Yes! Nothing like Anderson Barracks in Dexheim. I got there late 82 and it was there until April of 85 until I did a transfer to Frankfurt. I go there all the time my daughter and grandson and son-in-law live in Worms and the people the food it’s just wonderful. So many memories from those times. No strong military presence is there now not like it was and the majority of the bases are closed especially in that area. From Wiesbaden to Heidelberg but it’s still great to visit😁. I just left there in September for a full month and yes the festivals are still fantastic! 🎉

  3. I was stationed there from 1988-1990, C-Btry 2/3 ADA later designated 4/7 ADA. Spent most of my time in Grederwich and Dictelbach on he PATRIOT Initial Readiness Position. When not up there, in the Missile Storage Area just beyond the housing area. Remembered the new Commissary being built. You had to Love the four lane Bowling Alley. Or going up to Mainz or Weisbaden to actually go shopping. Hiding CD’s until payday? Going to the Tunnel for a Schnitzel. Great times… SFC Eddie B. Ellison and SSG Vacha and Worrel, Shivers just to name a few of my buddies and influences as a young 16T

    1. Hey Jeff I was in the 178th CSC from June 86 to June 88. I was a cook with SGT Fowler and SSG/SFC Rodriguiez. Scott and John Début were roommates, truckdrivers and two really greta friends of mine.

  4. I was station at Anderson Barracks attached to HHC 12th Engineers, but assigned to the community center as the SMCI US Military Customs from the 42nd MP Group had a blast when I was station there for two years 75 to 77, love the wine fest and the food

      1. Yes those were the good days Dretsel J, if memory serves me correct a German Film crew in the summer of 76 we had a meeting with the Battalion Commander and Maj Sutherland OIC of the Community Center he was my boss you might say, he tasked me and one of my inspectors to escort the crew around the base making sure they didn’t film the base name, than they wanted me and my inspector got in 1st Sergeant (HHC) red Cadillac and drove around with a cameraman in the back, the film was a love story of a woman in the snack bar/shop and the guy was I believe was in maintenance, than we had to lower the flag at Battalion Headquarters and put it back up. The filming took a few days. About a few months they came back and those that wanted to see the film in the base theater, the movie was great, my inspector and me got autograph scripts from the stars and film crew. Apparently with all my moving around don’t know where it is lost I guess.

    1. I was there as a teen and it was the best time ever, Kayle you got there right after my family left. the commissary was just 2 rows of nothing, but they had the basics we lived in the officer quarters and our back yard was the missile range I wish I knew how to find some of the people there, but the Army did keep us moving every 3 years and you lose touch. Our last move was to El Paso Tx and that was home… If any others get on here my name at the time was Sharon Flynn and would love to hear from you, we are all in our 60’s and 70’s now time flies. hope to see you on here.

  5. You got it Brother. Sorry for the misspells I was up late last night shoveling snow. I got about 14 in. We got hit hard here in Colorado in certain areas and I got hit hard with snow up the yang yang 🤢. Everything is closed again today in the metro area from schools to work you name it even the mom and pop restaurants are shut down due to weather.

  6. Robert Roby
    1SGT Delta Company 12th Engineer Battalion 1976 to 1979.
Many great memories of Dexheim and Andersen Barracks.

    1. we were there from 1976 to 1979 also my dad was a cook Russ Hunsinger not sure if .maybe you knew him.

      1. Hi my name is SSGT Joel Marcotte , I worked with Russ , I was there from 75 to 81 . He came to my wedding! How is he !

    2. Hi 1SGT , I was with the BEST company in Dexheim ,, from 75 to 81 . Delta Co.

  7. was stationed in dexheim anderson barracks c company 12th engineers 8th infantry division. water point 1970 to 1973. a lot of memories really liked it there, the locals were great people. i liked the castle ruins in oppenheim with the tower there…

    1. Yes Tony it’s a different feel up there now. You probably wouldn’t even recognize it. I will be heading back up there either in March or July. When I come back I will post a few pictures online. I go quite often because my daughter and grandson and son-in-law live in Worms about 20 miles from Dexheim. People there are still very friendly in Oppenheim.

      1. thx i was surprised to see anderson barracks closed. i actually checked to see what it would take for me to visit there again. of course to go there as a civilian now is expensive. i’m saving up for a one month visit there. i’m brushing up on my german lol.

        1. That’s a good idea Tony. Brushing up on your German is always good. So many of the Germans speak English now and if they don’t speak English somebody in the restaurant or the Guest House or ice cream shop etc somebody will speak English so if you don’t brush up on your German no problems. Oh and yes that jager schnitzel is still delicious let me tell you!

        2. Tony if you want to go when it’s not too expensive either go in October, March or April. You probably don’t want to go in November through February it’s a bit cold and not so much fun to be walking outside a lot but March is bearable, April is better but after May 15th through September is expensive. Just some food for thought.

      2. Hello, I was there 91-92 now I live in Worms. If you do come to Worms post here so we can go for a beer.

        1. Hello Torres, That sounds good to me. My daughter and my son-in-law and grandson for Worms will be here in the states visiting me next Friday or a week from today then we will talk about when I go back to Germany. What I have exact dates or as soon as I get to worms I will let you know on this forum and we can have not only a beer but some wine and some schnitzel and make it an old time German fest how does that sound?

          Dretsel J

      3. I didn’t have a clue that Anderson Barracks closed till recently when a friend of mine that worked with the Polizei Customs at Frankfurt Airport where I did my customs training for 2 months when she told me I was shock and sad

  8. I was stationed there from 75-77 in Bravo battery 2/1 ADA on the hill, I’m back in Germany as a contractor for DoD and would like to goto Anderson and see how it is changed

    1. I was there in Dexheim in 1958-61 and at that time it was called 12th Engineering Battalion and we were attached to the 8th Infantry Division out of Baumholder, and Bad Kruzernack,(I know that I spelled those names incorrectly. We were a Combat Engineering Company. There were one company, (A), which was Airborne and 3 companies that was infantry. I was in Headquarters company and there was also a Missile Battalion on Base. My name is John W. Fields and would love to hear from anyone who might have been there during that time

      1. I was at Anderson Barracks from 1988-92 with Delta Company, 12th Engineer Battalion (ADM) with Captain Schweitzer…what good times !! SEMPER GUMBY !!!

      2. I was in company an airborne in 1962 to 1965 we used to jump In ALZEY and Out of Frankfurt, Rein Mein , Finthen, CH 34 helicopters, L20 Otter Fixed wing eight troopers. Clyde Peek company a airborne 12th engineer battalion PO Box 662, Franktown, CO 80116

        1. Hello Clyde I hope all is well. Another fellow Dexheim comrade. You wouldn’t know the place now. I was stationed there from 82 to 85 in Charlie Company (C) and then did a ITT -inner travel transfer to Camp Eschborn a Frankfurt community which was the 317th Engineers wheel unit. I go back to Germany quite often because my daughter lives there but Anderson barracks you wouldn’t recognize it 🙂 I live in Colorado as well Littleton!

      3. I just found this note as I was researching Dexheim and Anderson Barracks for my husband and sister-in-law. My father-in-law, Capt. Dewey Coles, Jr., was there from about 1959 to 1962. He was in the Missile Battalion. My SIL was an infant (born in Wiesbaden), with big brothers John and Dwight, aged 5 and 6, respectively. Their mom is Carol. Dewey died in 2017, and Carol died in 2020. They always had such good stories about their time in Germany.

  9. I was there in 71 and 72 A company 8th fantry 12 engineer Airborne………loved lt there

  10. Stationed there from 1972 to 1974. Met alot of great dudes and are still in touch with a few of them. The concerts in Frankfurt and other places were the best. I seen great bands in their prime. Noting and no bands today will ever touch them. And same with the music…which stands on its own forever. The food outside of base was dynamite. Whether it was in Nierstien or Oppenheim or other cities. And the German Wine and the Wine fests were the best.

    1. Yes I couldn’t agree with you more Anderson Barracks was great duty. When I left Anderson Barracks in April of ’85 I did a ITT inner theater transfer (in country) I reenlisted to stay in Germany and I went to camp Eshbourne in Frankfurt. Much bigger and exciting community but it didn’t have the togetherness as it did in Anderson Barracks. The same thing as when I came back in 1988 and I went to Aschaffenburg, Germany. Nothing was like the Heim Nothing 👍

      1. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY… I TOO EXTENDED MY TOUR AND STAYED ANOTHER YEAR, BECAUSE I ENLISTED FOR 2 YEARS AND I DIDN’T WANT TO COME HOME AND HAVE TO PULL RESERVE DUTY. SO BY ME EXTENDING ANOTHER YEAR, I DID NOT HAVE TO DO THE RESERVES. TECHNICALLY WE ALL HAVE 6 YEARS, 3 ACTIVE AND 3 INACTIVE AT THE TIME. BECAUSE AFTER 6 YEARS, I RECEIVED MY FULL DISCHARGE PAPERS. SO I WAS HAPPY, NOT TO PULL RESERVE DUTY. I DIDN’T WANT TO BE A PART TIME SOLDIER. I WAS IN ASCHAFFENBURG FOR A WEEKEND HANGOUT AND I DUG THE CITY, ITS A COOL PLACE. HEIDELBERG WAS ANOTHER DYNAMITE AND BEAUTIFUL CITY TO BE IN. TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS

    1. Mr. Arnie if you were there in 1959-60 you gotta know me. I was on the basketball team an worked in S4 Battalion Supply across from the motor pool. I drove a 1953 Chevrolet Bel-Air. Everyone on post knew me. I’m the one who was left behind during an alert because I had fallen asleep on guard duty. I was in Headquarters company beside the missile battalion. Let me hear from you.

      1. John- my Dad was stationed there in 65-67. We all moved there and I have some great photos. Were you there during this time? My Dad is Richard Hazlewood.

    1. I remember you Yancey, I was there with you at the same time! I was in Echo Co. as a mechanic in the motorpool. If I’m not mistaken you married into the name Yancey while we were in Dexheim, I use to come to your husband (who was a 88M also) room to play the game with him…I could be mistaken but if I am my apologies.

      1. I was a private then, I mean E-1…It was good ride, I retire in April of 2024.

    2. 1999 – 2000 I was the Dexheim MWR director and it was indeed a wonderful tour. We answered to Bad 25 miles away and later were transfered under Weisbaden. What a wonderful time it was. I often wondered what became of Lothar Einsfeld? He was ex Army & Recreation Director who put on the best Halloween Scare show, in the whole US Army, all in a medium Army tent. yes indeed great times

      1. Indeed you are right 👍 I agree with you 100% wholeheartedly. Nothing was quite like Dexheim. I was there from 82 to 85 in Charlie Company 12th Engineer Battalion. I still go over there quite frequently because my daughter and grandson and son-in-law live in Worms. They just left here from the states last month for vacation. It’s definitely not the same like it use to be so hold on to those memories and photographs they will prove to be valuable in life.

      1. Zachary let me tell you as you know 🙂 nothing like Dexheim years right. I was there from 1982 to 1985 in C Company 12th Engr Bn and loved every day of it. It looks totally different now I don’t know when the last time you’ve actually seen how it looks but I go over there every year except this year because my daughter and her husband and my grandson came here but they live in Worms so I go Dexheim when I’m there!

  11. I was stationed here October ’92 to Oct ’95. I hand built the wooden arch above the sign in 1994/ 1995. It was originally white.

    1. I was stationed here 1974, 75 19.5 months. And it was a Engineering Battalion. With a Missile base attached

      1. I was stationed here from December 1982 to April 1985 in C Company 12th Engineer Battalion. Had so much fun there.

        1. I was there in 71 and 72 A company 8th fantry 12 engineer Airborne………loved lt there

      2. I was there than and the missle range was my back yard my dad was CWO Flynn at the range

        1. I was there from Dec 1969 to Feb 1972 in the Launcher Platoon. There were 2 CWO’s there CWO Flynn ad CWO Bryan

          1. I was so glad to see your reply, we were the Flynn’s, and we lived in the officers building on the second floor, those were the good old days. do you remember the racetrack on Sunday’s and the swimming pool by the barracks which was really the water they would pump in case of a fire. My mom worked at the little PX, gosh it was great. Well hope to hear from you again

    2. Yes Keith I just left the Rhinhessen area 3 1/2 weeks ago. I go to Germany quite often because my daughter and grandson and son-in-law live in Worms as you know about 20 miles from Dexheim. The military aspect of it is gone but Oppenheim and Nierstein are pretty much the same with a few nice guest houses and wine vineyards to go to. They still have a few good restaurants in oppenheim mostly in the residential area off of the main Street. When I go on a military installation we usually just go to Ramstein Air Base by Kaiser Slaughter or K-Town. It’s not the same anymore in Central Europe because most of the military obviously has pulled out. The other two locations I was stationed at as a combat engineer camp Eshbourne in the Frankfurt community and Aschaffenburg Germany are a thing of the past as well. Also Keith the 2 military 🪖 Kasernes in Worms Germany are closed as well and the NCO club has bushes and weeds growing all around it because of lack of care.
