  1. I was stationed at Coleman from 1962-1964 with the Aviation Maintenance Center. (USAAMC) where I was in the comm center. Loved to go to Heidelberg and drink beer at Zum Sepp’l. Bunch of GI’s even had a table and our own glasses there. Great memories.

  2. Sgt Michael Holley I was at Colman barracks I was there from 1975 to 1978 and Charlie battery second 67 Ada on a chaparral crew had some good times reforger anyone remember that just checking to see what kind of comments I get I hope everybody’s okay

  3. I was in C Coy 4/8 Inf. Rocky, Tui Logasiga (sp?) big Samoan funny and gentle hearted, Jim fellow Canadian. I was a Driver and Rifleman. Good group of guys. My track C11 had not made a field problem in three years under her own power I was told. That was until I got her, named her Waschbar, and fixed every little thing on her. I was like a tick on the motor pool sergeant’s ass. Ramp, Heater, Lights, Final Drives, Clutches all worked perfectly. I loved driving her.

    1. Hey OD! I believe you and I were stationed together with the 97th signal battalion. How you been?

  5. I was stationed at Coleman from 2/67-8/68. I was an 11Bravo with the 3rd of the 8th Cav until I was transferred to HHC 3rd of the 8th Inf Div as a clerk typist in S-1.

I had an aptartment in Sandhoven owned a 1965 Mustang convertible and toured Europe with my wife.

    Great Army experience.

  6. I arrived at Coleman Barracks on December 11, 1961. I was assigned to the Co. B, 1st Battle Group, 18th Inf, 8 Inf Div. (Later to be the 2nd Bn, 13th Inf.) This B.G. consisted of 7 companies, HQ, A,B,C,D,E, and Combat Support Co. of almost 400 men. The BG at Coleman was 1800 men. The B.G was just returning from Berlin where it was sent at the beginning of the Berlin Crisis. At that time, their was also the 3 Squadron (5 Troops (companies) and A troop was Airborne, of the 8th Cavalry, the 4th Bn. of the 68th Army and various support units such as Ordnance, Transportation, medical, aviation (Mostly helicopters, but a few fixed wing), finance and the Mannheim Stockade was built in 1962-3. It was a crowded base and always busy. I was assigned to the Unit Police in February 1963 and life got much better with no field duty until I was discharged in Germany on July 10, 1964.

  8. i was at coleman barracks 1960-1963, wall being built, tour turned from 12mo. to 31mo. my side, hq.+77th ord building, 533rd ord bldg next, then 517th ord. yellow bldg. up front near gate, 2 stories, was 81st ord bn. hq, where i worked.  other side of base and differant gate was infantry, not much else there then, i am 82 as of this post on 6 mar, 2024. gaylonray100@gmail.com.

  9. I was in the Scout Platoon with 4/8 Inf. @ Coleman Barracks from 1989-92 trained for CAV Cup and our platoon placed 3rd in USAEUR. We did the last border missions & pulled guard duty in Heidelberg USAEUR HQ during the Gulf War for Gen. Shalikashvili. I served with a great group of guys! Including the 4.2 Platoon!

  10. I was stationed at Coleman Barracks from 1983 to 1986 assigned to 2nd Battalion, 13 Infantry (“40 Rounds!”), which was redesignated as 4th Battalion, 8th Infantry (“Fighting Eagles”) in 1984. We were a part of the 3rd Brigade, 8th Infantry Division. I served as a rifle platoon leader in Charlie Company, as the Battalion 4.2 inch Mortar Platoon Leader, and finally as the Executive Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Company. I was fortunate to serve when nobody was shooting at us, although the cold war was at its height and it was somewhat tense. I lived off post in nearby Lampertheim. The 8th ID was a long way from the Fulda Gap, and we were the last to get any new equipment. We were still wearing steel pot helmets and riding in M113s when the rest of USAEUR was wearing kevlar helmets and riding in Bradleys. Nonetheless I served with great officers and enlisted men, and have many fond memories of my time in the Army in Germany.

    1. Alan, I was in Charlie company also at that time. Drove C-61 for Captian Karpinski. Good times back then.

  11. I was at Coleman Barracks, 97th Signal Bn, from September 1968 until December 1970. I spent about 8 months in A Company where we participated in field exercises and spent a lot of time in the motor pool working on vehicles until the command change from 7th Army to NATO and then went to HQ Co where I worked in S-3 until my DEROS. Until we became a part of NATO, regular levies took place to Viet Nam. Once we became a part of NATO, because Viet Nam wasn’t a NATO conflict, we were no longer in danger of a levy. Prior to NATO much of the food we received in the Mess Hall was C-rations. Once we became part of NATO the food improved greatly. Of course there was always the Wurst Stand outside the Main Gate.

    1. That wurst stand was a treat while waiting for the Strasse! The bologna, pickle, cheese, and mustard was not only unusual but delicious!

      1. Hi Janice,

I remember that stand well. I always got a hanchenschnitzel (sp) with mustard and a pickle while waiting for that strasse! I was there at Coleman 1980-1982.

        1. I recall a bus station near the Main gate that took us to the Strasse (10pf for the entire trip to Mannheim).

  12. I was stationed at Coleman Barracks from 1989 – 1992 with the FIST Platoon for 4 – 8 Infantry, 8th ID.

  13. I was at Colman Barracks from August of 68 until December of 69. I was a 67N20 helicopter crew chief and was in field maintenance at the airfield and in the 582 Transportation Company behind the hangers at the airfield. I brought my wife and son to Germany with me, I lived in an apartment in Viernheim until someone stole my car and I had no way to get to work, I couldn’t afford another car so I sent my family home and moved back in the barracks for my final year in the Army. I didn’t care much for Germany or the 582nd, it was mostly a busy work company with no mission. They gave me 3 different OH13 Helicopters, all different models, and told me to make one flying aircraft out of the 3. Being different models, that is like taking a Ford, Chevy and a Studebaker and making a Dodge out of them. It got really boring pretending to work for 14 months. A Huey came into the hanger every now and then and I got to do some real work that I loved and was trained for. At least going to Germany kept me out of Vietnam, which was a blessing.
