GERMERSHEIM ARMY DEPOT

The 24/7 depot sits on more than 430 acres of land and is about a 90-minute drive from any U.S. military base service. Of the depot’s approximately 850 employees, only about 165 are DOD ID holders so there is a heavy reliance on the local economy. Garrison employees include public works personnel, security staff, firefighters and postal workers.
Originally used after WWII as a U.S. Army storage site for equipment, it was officially established as an Army depot Oct. 18, 1951, and named Germersheim Ordnance Vehicle Park with a mission to store, receive, and issue equipment and supplies in support of U.S. Army in Europe. At the time, it was the only vehicle park in theater that could store 25,000 vehicles, to include trucks, jeeps, ambulances, armored cars, tractors and trailers.

i was a 63B vehicle mechanic with Bco 63rd Sig Bn from 85-87. I remember those discos ftom those days. I also handled the fuel for my company, I would like as much information as there is concerning the contaminated water & soil, especially with the PACT ACT in place. The government should recognize this and let veterans know about it.

    1. Scott i worked there from 71 thrue 79 and i worked in Heidelburg for many years later the German government has found contamineted water in the four surounding towns that the Depot is next to and has determined that the epia center is the Depot i filled because we burned spoiled equipment after each reforger same as in in Vietnam if you have any lung issues file a claim i speak and write German as my family live in Rulzheim and i have the news paper articles were the army is now trying to get a permit to clean the soil to clean up the mess thats there in and on the ground you know they never recovered the water used to clean equipment and the spills that took place there keep in contact and i will let you know how my case goes i recommend you file one also the more the less they have to denie the claims Bruce Sidwa

      1. I entered the above before I changed my public profile name. Is there any way to edit the post?

        1. Hey Dan

i was one of the vehicle mechanics, not sure if you remember me.

          1. Sorry, I don’t. I do remember the XO. And the 1Sgt. If I remember correctly he took the rank just so that he could go to the Sgt Major academy.

              1. Dan

i hope you have had a chance to read the other threads about the contamination at the depot, Bruce Sidwa has first hand information, the toxic exposure qualifies under the PACT ACT

      2. Scott i have a great deal of Family there in Rulzheim on the other side of Bellheim, and the German government has filed a suit against the US Army as the water is contaminated in the four towns I have filled that border Gad Depot I have filed a pact act as well as a heart problems as we burned a lot of non servicable equipment while I was there which falls under the pact act if you need more information contact me

        1. Bruce,

I have been diagnosed with a heart valve problem, and I don’t know if it is related to any toxic exposure at Germersheim from the water or chemicals as a mechanic. I am trying to find any information that I can show the VA that this is a PACT Act or other hazardous exposure event. Any information you could send me to my email Justdog@tampabay.rr.com would be greatly appreciated

          Thank you

          Scott H.

          1. Scott i to have heart problems as well as copd and asma which they contribute to the pact act as we burned equipment from the Reforger exercise that we supplied over the time if you google Germersheim Army depot you will find the problem with the water as well as the soil we all worked on while living there I filed under the pact act and have been going threw extensive docktor aptments and testing at the moment this is the first step to getting a disability rating from the contamination there which is still present today. What state do you live in I’m in New Jersey, and my phone number is 856 982 4471 if you want to talk in person, I have a great deal of information on it.

    1. Just so all the military personnel that lived on the Depot was drinking contaminated water and came into contact with the soil it was and is still contaminated with tph chemicals which are used in the cleaning of vehicles and parts

      1. At what point has this situation been known and how far back does cause a concern?

        1. This has been known by the Army Office of Environmental Services for quite some time as you know equipment that is located there is cleaned and prepped for dep[oyment and storage the four surrounding towns that border the Germersheim Depot have reported contamination in their drinking water. which also means the Depot is the cause and the EPA center of this The military is trying to acquire a permit to start cleaning up all the contaminated soil they are waiting to see what the permits and the process that the German government will require them to do. if you can read German there are many articles in the local paper thier.

My mother was convinced that the US Army was breaking child labor laws. I also worked in the bedding /mattress warehouse for Otto Borger, and Mr. Johannes. GREAT TIMES!

    1. I was there the summer of ’84 and ’85 with the Signal Company next to the Mess Hall. Hanging out with the local girls at Petra’s Disco and the Clou. I was 23 years okd. I married a local girl in 1987 but that didn’t last but a couple years.

  5. I was attached there as a food inspector in 1987. Lived in the tiny barracks.

    1. That’s a little after my time I worked at the Bellheim Tank Farm and billeted in the dept in 1961 and married a girl that lived at the entrance of the depot.

        1. I was also at the medical clinic from 1974 to Sept 1977. I was assigned to the 89th Medical Detachment at the 130th Station Hospital but I was domiciled in Germisheim. If I remember correctly the dispensary was the 19 th Medical Detachment.

          1. Yes. That was the one. Remember the French receptionist named Janette? Lol

            1. I do remember her. I actually roomed with Jack Lemanowitz, he was the pharmacy tech. I can’t remember his last name, but Ernie the clerk roomed with us also. I really enjoyed working in the clinic. I was fortunate that Elsie Vindhurst the dental receptionist, kept me informed well after I left. The German ambulance drivers especially Manfred treated us really well. Jack and I spent some time with him and his family visiting some of the sites.

              1. That’s Right! Manfred was so cool with everyone. So much shenanigans going on, but he just shrugged and laughed it off. I also remember Elsie. Wow. What a good memory. Thx for sharing.

  7. I was billeted there in 1961 while stationed at the Bellheim Tank Farm and met my wife there.

  8. I was stationed there 1974 to 1977 with the 89th Medical Detachment. I have fond memories, but it was much smaller.

  9. I was stationed there with the U.S. Army’s 547th Ordnance Co sometime between late 1970 through August 1971. Very secluded place. Took the train to K-town on paydays. Looking at old photos of Kleber Kaserne in Kaiserslautern and these of the Army depot are un-rememberable. Like a dream.

    1. Bob, I was Lt Mulvany from when the 547th moved from K-town to Germersheim. I got out in 5/72. Lived in Karlsruhe. Sargent Hurska looked after me in the shop. A lot of good fellows in the 547th. I always wonder what happen to them. I went to work for ConocoPhillips at the Denver Refinery, Retired in 2006.
