  1. HI all,

I was stationed with HQ Co 1AD 3rd 35th between ’73 -’75 which were the last set of barracks on the right before getting to the Rod & Gun Club. We’d tell the taxi drivers Gates 2-1/2 and jump the fence. Loved the area and the people. I do want to go back and take my wife downtown at some point.

  2. Looking for anyone who served in Bamberg—67 and 68. I was with 4AD 2/54 infantry. Bob Wolly

    1. I was not there at that timeframe, but I do know a few that were there at the same time as you were. I was there from 1973 to present. Never really left Bamberg.

      1. Sorry for the late reply. Your pictures are great. Sure bring back memories. I was a Medic. Assigned to headquarters company–2/54th. I live in Florida–retired now served 67 and 68. If you have a couple of names send them off to me Bwolly46@gmail.com. Thanks Bob

    2. Hi Robert Willy, my Father SSG Edward Gallegos served in Bamberg Germany. He was Infantry. I was a child at the time. We were there between 1966 through 1969. My Father had served two tours in Vietnam prior to us being stationed in Germany and one tour in the Korean War. Both of my parents were in the Army. My Mother Nancy Gallegos was a WAC and served prior to Germany as well. I am very proud of both of them! My sweet Father passed in 2007 from Agent Orange and my Mother in 2022 from Covid. They were definitely hero’s to me! I have wonderful memories living on post and just reading these replies brought back the feelings of those days. There many special families we meet while there!

      1. Sorry for the late reply. Your parents are heroes. Sorry to hear of their passing. I am happy that you have such great memories of both of them. You should be very proud. They answered the call to protect our county and the people in it. Because of them we have our freedom today. God bless you.

    3. Name: William Vaughn, Sgt. Unit was C Co. 2/54 Nov 65 to May 68. Remember “Pork Chop”? I remember Roosevelt Ridge in the winter of 67-68 with the coldest winter since 1939. We actually had a case of frostbite (court martial offense) that was not charged. The man was medically discharge minus a few toes. Which company were you with?

      1. Hi William again—just realized after reading your second comments. I was probably the medic that treated the frost bite case. We brought him to the 188th dispensary for emergency surgery then he stayed there a few days–don’t remember if we sent him to the big hospital in Nurenberg after that. Letme knowif you remeber any details

        Bob

    4. Name: William Vaughn, C Co, 2/54, Nov 65 to Apr 68. Being from the 2/54, I know you remember “Pork Chop”. He used to go through the battalion area looking for men out of uniform or needing a haircut. He was rumored to have said to one unfortunate “I want to see you in my office at 1730 today. If you don’t have a haircut by then, you won’t have the money to get one.” He loved duty in the field and thought the rest of us did too. Remember Roosevelt Ridge? My company was on it during the winter of 67-68. It was the coldest since 1939…absolutely miserable. I was sent back to Bamberg in 1975 and visited my old barrack. It was occupied by C Co, 2/52, 1st AD. Their orderly room was our old shower room. Which company were you with?

      1. Hi William,

Can’t say I remember Pork Chop but I very much remember the winter of 67 and 68. I was a medic in headquarters co. We were in the last barracks before the track park. We gave you those great shots and the physicals. We were field medics and were out in the cold with you guys. If I remember our medical office was in C company barracks. Keep in touch. I was just contacted by Herb Calbo. He worked in Battalion and knew several of the guys I did.

    5. Hello Robert, my name is Herbert Calbo and I was stationed in Bamberg from Nov 1966 to June 1968. I also was assigned to Hqts, 2nd Bat. 54th Inf. I don’t recognize your name but we probably knew each other visually. I was assigned to S-2 at Hqtrs building working for both 1st Sgt Fitzpatrick and Sgt. Major William Boyle. The commanding Officer was Lt. Col. Robert J. Kirk. I still keep in touch with three other Hqtrs. army buddies namely, James Beaver (Tenn.), our old mailman, James Buchanan (Arkansas), and Ross Loper (NY).

Our old Hqtrs Amin clerk Phillip Dees passed away, so did Dennis Day (Army Publications) office, Tim Marshall (Mich), and also my good friend Kenneth Boardman. Lost track of my other good buddy named Paul Bustamante.

My job was to drive Fitzpatrick, or Boyle around in a jeep but primarily was a M114 APC driver. I hope you recognize a name as it would be fun to know a fellow 2/54 soldier. If you are interested in emailing me directly, do so. email: CALH7862@yahoo.com or text 818-426-4305. I live in N. Hollywood, Ca.

  3. Was only there from July 90 through January 91. I was in 4/14FA. We were part of the first units to be deactivated from Germany. I really thought I would be moved to a unit that was going to Desert Storm but myself and a few others that only been in country for a short time was sent back to the U.S.

  4.  Eddie Williams served the last 7 months of my second enlistment as Army’s Medic September 73 until April 74.

  6. I was stationed at Warner Barracks from November 1978 until September 1981 as a Field Artillery Office with the 2-78 FA. We supported the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. I loved the area, my unit, and the German people.

    1. Lived, possibly: in the same building as you at the same time C 1/52 1974 to 77. Do you remember Col. Soland?

    2. My name is Gregory Davis, I was station at Warner barrack , unit C first-52nd. Do you happen to know of any tragedy that May occurred during this time.

  7. Stationed with the 3rd Infantry Division in 1959-61. Most of my pals are gone now. Bamberg was an incredible experience for this young PFC. Did my duty and returned to the U.S. via the USNS Rose. G.I. bill helped me graduate from the University of New Mexico in 1973.

    1. Ed, I was there from April 1962 till October 1963. In the 4th Infrantry. I was a draftee. Did you ever eat at a place named the cafe ciaro in downtown Bamberg? With the exchange rate being four to one us dollar, you could get a great meal with a beer for. One dollar. Came home in 63 on the USS Darby. My first experience being sea sick. Let’s talk. genelulu56@yahoo.com

    2. My father was stationed at Warner Barracks from 1959-1962 with the 2nd Armored Cavalry. I loved Bamberg, and also enjoyed being bused to Nurnberg and staying in the dorm at Nurnberg American High School in 10th grade.

  8. Between Aug of 1980 to the year of
1981 I lived as Military Dependent at the First Apartment Building, on Ulm Straße. My Father was known by some of the younger soldiers as fast Freddie. SFC Freddie L Pfaff Sr. Too, I was enrolled in the month of August at the Barron’s MS/HS, wow was ever young, just 16½ years old.
I have fond hanging out at Youth Dependent Activity Center (YDAC), also frequenting the Rec. Center, the Cafeteria for some Pinball.

Would there be “anyone” whose family may have been posted there during the early 1980s? Possibly recalling the life as MD (Military Dependent), including the other classmates and faculty too. In the least, I am able to recall VIVIDLY every detail, of our apartment, location of the classrooms, my teachers. So many faces flood my memories, faces unforgotten but some names are vague yet still. Well…in less than 3 months this former dependent will be turning 60 yrs of age.
    Sincerely, Freddie L Pfaff Jr.

    1. FREDDIE I WAS STATIONED THERE IN MARCH THRU JULY 1971. WAS E4 AND HAD JUST RETURNED FROM TDY AY NUREMBERG ARMY HOSPITAL WHEN GOT MESSAGE MY MOM WAS ILL

  9. Jerry you were on a com. 88 write? My name is David robinson I was also in a com maint . Hope you read this you are the first person I have found and I have been looking a long time

  10. I served at Warner Barracks II from Oct 1974 to 11 November, 1977 as a platoon leader in G Trp, 2/2 ACR for a year, then XO of E Trp, 2/2 ACR for 6 months and then a year as Support Platoon Leader in HHT, 2/2 ACR. We spent 8 months out of each year either on border patrol duty, out in the field on training maneuvers, or at tank gunnery at Grafenwohr and Hohenfels. All of my Troop Commanders were Vietnam Veterans and were excellent. All of the 2/2 ACR Sergeants in the rank of SSG or above were Vietnam Vets and very professional ”lifers”. I learned just about everything I needed to know about being a good leader from those sergeants. I ran into several of them later in my Army career at stateside posts. Bamberg was a great place to serve. Loved the Rauch Bier (smoked beer) gasthaus down by the rathaus in the old city center. Went back there in 2002, 25 years after leaving in 1977, Some things hadn’t changed much but other things were gone completely. One of the old motor pools and tank/SP artillery parking areas was no longer there but was paved over and a memorial to the Bamberg soldiers killed in the Gulf War in 1991. Warner Barracks II was no longer a cavalry outfit but was field artillery. The place was like a ghost town as most of the unit was gone. My old Support Platoon motor pool hadn’t changed much at all–same fuel pumps were there!!! Charles J. Barr

    1. Lt. Barr!!! SP/4 Oliva here. I was the armorer in GTRP until I left in October 1975. You used to have to do inventory with me in the arms room. I always wondered what happened to you. I live in Gilroy, CA. now. Last year I went to a reunion with the guys from 3rd platoon (infantry). email me back and I’ll send you pictures!

  11. Anthony L. “TEX” McAuliffe
    B-6/10FA, then B-4/14FA (Maint)
    10Jan1987 to Dec1989.
In light of events, now…maybe it was a DUMB idea of O’Bummer to close it down
    “Mission First!” Then “Rock’s Support!”

  12. Are the Warner Barracks still used today. I was stationed there in 1979-1980

    1. I visited on June 2022. I tried to enter the main gate but a German Policewomen told us it a German Police Academy (part of it.) Part of the post is used to house refugees. I was stationed there 1972-1974. The area where the PX was is all being demolished and rebuilt. The barracks by the main gate are all there and that’s where the police academy is. Sad to see.

    2. Hi Jerry, regrettably they are not used by the US Army anymore. German Federal Police uses about 85% of it, a small section (old housing area) is used to host refugees, maybe 10% (Lagarde Kaserne on Zollner Straße) is currently developed by the city of Bamberg to build housing and start-up businesses. 1. Hi Simon, the German Federal Police only use 50% and the other 50% is for the refugees.

    3. Jerry you were on a com. 88 write? My name is David robinson I was also in a com maint . Hope you read this you are the first person I have found and I have been looking a long time

  13. Nice pages! Thank you for putting this together. Btw, unless you’re retired with absolutely no responsibilities at home, you do not want to leave the United States at the moment, as a negative Covid test is required for re-entry, even if you’re fully vaccinated.
