THE FORMER FORT ORD OF CALIFORNIA

Fort Ord is a former United States Army post on Monterey Bay of the Pacific Ocean coast in California, which closed in 1994 due to Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action. Most of the fort’s land now makes up the Fort Ord National Monument, managed by the United States Bureau of Land Management as part of the National Conservation Lands, while a small portion remains an active military installation under Army control designated as the Ord Military Community.

  1. BT, AIT and LPC as a draftee caught-up in the that lottery system. May-October 1970, an introduction to the military that convinced me to make the Army a career. Retired June 1990 as a MSG.

  2. I was a young second lieutenant having just completed infantry officers basic and airborne school in Ft. Benning, GA, and was assigned to Ft. Ord June 1963. Wife and Ai arrived at Post Hq. and I was immediately assigned as a platoon leader in the 293rd Military Police Company. I remained there until January 1965, whereupon I was appointed company commander in an AIT company. I was honorably discharged September 1965. My wife and I truly loved my military experience, Ft Ord and the gorgeous Monterrey Peninsula. When the post was closed it was a sad time for me!

    1. Better you than me. I served at Planet Ord from March 1987 to late May 1989. I gained from serving at Ord a greater appreciation of Fort Sill.

      1. Forgot to mention where I was assigned on Planet Ord. 7th Battalion, 15th Field Artillery commanded by LTC Joseph Dooley. Part of 7th ID (L) DIVARTY. I myself was an E5.

  3. I served at FT ORD aka Planet Ord from 1977-1980 HHB 6/80th Artillery Battalion ,I just went back for a visit yesterday and didn’t recognize anything. Where the front gate coming in from Seaside was totally gone, no point of reference at all. It’s part of the highway now. SMDH, first time back in 43 years. I knew it was shutdown, but thought as a tourist attraction it would be something there 🤔

    1. Did my Basic training there in 55. Went back recently and was saddened to see what it has become. Attempted to find things I remembered but they have all been replaced by houses, businesses, and stuff. And the remaining few barracks are covered with graffiti and falling apart.

  4. Took my Basic here in 1955, in the new barracks up on the hill. Then it was the 63rd Infantry Regiment. The Flying 63rd. The beginning of my 39 year career. Two trips to Korea, three years in Turkey and just about every other post in the states. Sad to see the shape it is in

  5. I did basic & Ait at Ord in 75. We were in the new brick billets for basic & the 2 story wood barracks for signal corps. The 3 previous training cycles several died from meningitis. When the fog came in they trucked us everywhere. Our PT Field was right across from the barracks. I met a couple of guys that went up the house on the hill to learn Russian. In Monterey bay they had a diving bell you could ride down & veiw sea life. They should have kept it Ord, I don’t think any of the politicians even read the paper work we all signed to keep it. This is what happens when folks who were never in the military try and act like they know what is best for the military. Commo rat

  6. Extremely sad it was the biggest Infantry US Army post.My Basic Training 1973 B-2-3
When the Tree Huggers took it over in 1994 it became this unfortunate travesty.🥁👎

    1. I also did Basic in 1973, also B-2-3, Nov thru Dec. Drill Sergeants King and Valdez

  7. I served at Ord (aka Planet Ord) From March 1987 until late May 1989. I gained from serving at Ord a greater appreciation of Fort Sill, where I spent two years after completing One Station Unit Training. I was a Buck Sergeant, 13Bravo20. Artillery. Hated the hard corps atmosphere of Planet Ord. Some of those Soldiers, both commissioned and non commissioned were just plain nuts. Some of them were normal human beings, though.

  8. Was stationed there in a scout platoon in 83 in one of the white cement buildings during my reenactment. Then some called it planet ord, because of the fog.

  9. Beautiful Army post. I took basic and AIT there in 1960. In the new barracks for basic and the old ones for AIT.

  10. Stationed here June 81 through April 83 in B Co. 1/32nd Inf. One of the best Army posts stateside for infantrymen – old Cannery Row, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Monterey. Drank beer in the Hog’s Breath Inn when Clint Eastwood owned it. Camped in the Big Sur. Really hard training including Ft. Hunter Liggett and Camp Roberts south of the fort.

    1. I was there about the same time you were. I was in 2/10 air cav. I was fond of going to Carmel and big sur. The pressure from nco’s and officers seemed higher than when I was stationed in Germany.

  11. A friend of mine was stationed there back in 1966 but I never made it to the place. I hear it’s real nice. Sits on the ocean.
