| 529) Copperas Cove TX | When I first arrived in Schwabach, in April 1974, My First Sergant was Sgt Pedraza. B-Btry 2/59ADALaura Canales-Morales: They were our upstairs neighbors. We lived “on the hill” in housing.kevin womble: was your dad a sargeLaura Morales: Yes my father was a Sergeant.. I can’t remember if he was a SSG of SFC at the time.Perry D. Hardmeyer: Laura, I also was in HHT 1/1 Cav from 1974 – 1979. I was a cook. I don’t remeber your dad by name, but then I was just an E5. What did your father do?Howard Bucknam: Hi Laura, My name is Howard Bucknam (Buck) and I just discovered this site last week and was really glad to read your comments because when I was over there from March ’75 to October ’76 I served with two Canales’! One was actually my platoon Sgt. and a younger one who was then an E-5 (Buck Sgt.) like myself. As a matter of fact, if memory serves, Plt. Sgt. Conales actually served with the younger Sgt. Conales’ dad or knew him in some way. Now, I don’t know that they were related but it was strange that both of them wound up in the same unit in Germany. I was in “C” Troop, 1/1 Cav as an infantry squad leader with two APC’s in my squad. Both Sgt. Conales’ were super guys and well liked by most everybody. I know I really enjoyed my time there with them. The younger (Sgt.) Conales actually had his driver’s license for over there and a, what else, Volkswagon and would drive us around if we needed to go somewhere if he could. It saved having to take the train or other transportation. Do you know them both and are they okay? I’d love to find out about them. Please drop a note back on the Guestbook under my entry when you get a chance. My entry is #559. Waiting to hear from you but they may not remember me, maybe, I don’t know! |

Well I am happy about that ,I am getting to old for this Shit. Greer I be looking for those pictures. Later my brother Schwabacher’sfrom greer: Hey Charlie, check with V.A. on hearing aids. I had same problem and they gave me 2 $4,000 hearing aids that work great. Super small. So check in with them, fill out a one sheeter and see what they will do. Remember the Veterans administration (which has to do congresses dirty work and really suck at it) is quite different from V.A. Hospital, which REALLY trys to help the vet with minimum hassle. (not like 30 years ago) they have changed and have top notch medicine, at least here in Denver. |
| 501) Maryland | I was in Transportion secton HHT 2/4 cav and was there when the 2/59 moved from stateside to O’Brien Barrachs. They built an new ammo dump for your chappral missles. And us lowly truck drivers had something to guard other than trucks and tanks. I miss those days. |

Retired from the Army reserves in the nineties as a CW4. I remember all the good times we had in town and out in the field. I was in “A” troop at the last, but also in “B” troop when I first got there.Jennie Arnold: I think the last unit was D troop. It was his tank that was painted pink just prior to an inspection and the Sheridans were still considered classified.Dave Parker-67-69-B Troop: I remember the pink tank. Gary Owen (7th Cav) “stole” it and did the paint job. You were correct as they were still classified at the time. It got a lot of folks excited.Michael J. Harbin: Jennie. I was SP/4 in HHT transportion section 2/4/cav from 1970 – 1971. My first Section sgt. was SFC Breeden .I assure you I crossed paths with your Father. I hauled fuel (JP4 – mogas)to all troops.I also hauled rations to all battlion messhalls, Troops, supplies, track parks to the moterpools. And that was home or in the field, to all boarder station we went to. I had my 18th birthday at a plce call Tennalow firing range on guard duty. | 486) Long Island | Hey Fred–speak english–(lol) how do I/we get to this ‘subdirector/military gallery’?? I’d like to see those photos–thanks!!Fred Barry Nelson: Hi Sid, I appreciate your frustration. The Guestbook format won’t let me copy the link. Go to Nurnbergmilitaryarea.com and then click on “New photos from Donald Rom” in the “Military Photo Gallery.” The photo looks like a rural training area–not the Schwabach Bahnhof–which may explain why these pics aren’t in the O’Brien Barracks part of this wonderful website. It’s not “English” to me either! Aber Ich spreche ein Wenig deutsch. Aufwiederschreiben!Sid Kelly: Thanks, Fred: I checked out the photos and remember those days well. Later generations of Tankers never heard of the M551 or its ability to swim–Fred Barry Nelson: Hi Sid, Glad you found the photos of the M551 Sheridan tanks. I’d read about them, but I got out too early to ever see one. One of our 2/4 Cav lieutenants who was involved in the evaluation of the Sheridan gave it a bad rating. But it must’ve been fun.Sid Kelly: I went to the Chassis Mechanic School for them when they first came out–I, personally, loved them as they ran like a ‘bat out of Hell’. They were designed for VietNam as they would float in the rice paddies unlike the M60’s which would sink. I was not ‘fire control’ certified but I understand they did have some problems in that area–and we CAN’T forget that if you hit a tree or something with the front track idler, the idler would snap off, taking a big portion of the ‘alum’ hull–but it was way ahead of it’s time in lots of areas——Kellyniok: Hi guys/Gals If you ever wanted to give your children and loved one or some one staying far from you, that special surprise christmas gift then here is the chance. They handed him the slip and he wiped himself with it. Didn’t go over too big with higher up. He got out on apathy discharge. General discharge. Also we used to lock the doors from the inside and put one of those lock insert in the keyhole so when you looked in the keyhole it looked like it was locked and no one home. Brass would knock all day but we never came out so they left with out us. Hinton and I had the whole base to ourselves for a week. | 438) Springdale, Arkansas | To whom it may concern:I don’t know if you guys have noticed this yet, but asking people to email in to get a password has SERIOUSLY cut the traffic to this site.Let’s face it; this feature discourages most legit veterans from trying to sign the guestbook and thereby reconnect with old military friends. This used to be a site I checked everyday, but then one day, I had to have and email in to get a password. After a few months, I finally emailed for one, only to find that practically no one has signed the book since the last time I did.Was spamming really this BIG a problem? Please consider removing this feature until the site has become MUCH more established. There are still a lot of miltary veterans who are only now discovering the internet. The password request feature discourages them from investingating the site. Thanks for your consideration, John Sullivan Obrien Barracks 1987-1991Sid Kelly: John-you could be right–I used to check 2-3 times a day and now only once every day or so——EDDIE: YOU ARE THE NEW CARETAKER OF THE O’BRIEN BARRACKS GUESTBOOK. | 435) – | I was amazed at the things you could purchase,(legally and illegally) on the streets of Germany.Switchblades and fireworks were among a few. We would purchase a bag of bottle rockets and sneak them on post by putting the shafts up our sleeve and holding the bag handles as we passed the M.P.”s. I was in C trp 1/1 cav. My barracks was directly across from the P.X.We would get all abuzz on Tucher and other assorted goodies, then start blasting the rockets from our window. The windows opened inward like two doors. At the bottom of the sill was a receptacle for the latch witch held the shaft of a rocket quite well. Once as a huge rocket was lifting off, it veered back towards the room, hit the ceiling, and came into the room. We all took cover. I jumped against my wall locker and tried to close the doors on myself. The rocket exploded and burnt a hole in our pretty, newly remodeled, red floor. The room was thick with smoke which then emptied into the hallway as we opened the door. The C.Q. was cool and didn’t report us. We rearranged our furniture and hid the burn with footwear under the bunk. I have so many good memories from so long ago. I was there for 2 1/2 years that seemed like a lifetime then.It was only a brief moment in retrospect.kevin womble: Hey mark i was there with you and remember the fireworks incident! |

It got so late that by time we got back the exercise was over.Fred Barry Nelson: Hey, Sid, Inspiring story about the NCO Academy. As for me, I washed out of OCS…had stress fractures in my shins…and no one came to my rescue when the Army doctors put me on a full profile, which prevented me from doing any PT and made it all-but-certain that I’d be washed out. I was in Co A, Armor OCS, Ft Knox, commanded by CPT Tilley, who said, “No one gets through my company on a profile! I was an also-ran in OCS in any case. But it all seems like fun more than 40 years later. If I’d gotten a commission, I’d have served at least another 10 months, and I’d have had a better chance of going to Nam instead of Schwabach.Fred Barry Nelson: Hi Don, It sounds as though your approach to escape & evasion was similar to mine. Are you thinking of going to the reunion this year? There’s a ferry from LI to New London.Sid Kelly: Fred– Ltc Valjean basically ‘took me under his wing’ after doing a surprise visit to my inspection bay one morning–I was in the pit inspecting one of the new M-715’s and he showed up and started asking all sorts of questions–I don’t think I knew exactly what I was talking about (esp when it came to the difference between an oil leak and a seep) but like I told Sfc Ekerst when he asked about the visit–‘either dazzle ’em with brilliance or baffle ’em with bull s—‘ and ‘Frankie V’ was my friend from then on–TIM J.: FRED NELSON I REMEMBER E&E MY BATTLE WITH THE AGGRESSORS THEY ONLY MOVED WHEN WE DID THEY DIDN’T MOVE UP TO CAPTURE US SO WE FLANKED THEM TO SEE HOW MANY THERE WERE THERE WAS AT 5 NO WEAPONS JUST HOOFS AND UDDERS (MOO)TIM J.: FRED NELSON I REMEMBER E&E MY BATTLE WITH THE AGGRESSORS THEY ONLY MOVED WHEN WE DID THEY DIDN’T MOVE UP TO CAPTURE US SO WE FLANKED THEM TO SEE HOW MANY THERE WERE THERE WAS AT LEAST 5 NO WEAPONS JUST HOOFS AND UDDERS (MOO) |

CELTICSONTIM J.: FRED NO LUCK SO FAR I THINK I MAY NEED A FAMILY NAME MOST OF THE NEWSPAPERS IN SCHWABACH. ARE IN GERMAN EXCEPT THE STARS AND STRIPES. I AM LOOKING FOR A COPY FOR THE MONTH OF FEB 1968 IF ANYONE HAS ONE PLEASE SEND A E-MAIL TO FRED BERRY NELSON. THE WOMAN IS LOOKING FOR THE TROOPER WHO SAVED HER AS A BABY. CELTICSON.Fred Barry Nelson: Hi Tim, The woman’s name is Stephanie Engelage. But she must be 41 years old now, so “Engelage” may be her married name. I just sent her an email in German asking for her birth name. Thanks again for your help.TIM J.: TO FRED NELSON I HAD TROUBLE GETTING TO THE GUESTBOOK LATELY I HAVEN’T FOUND ANYTHING ABOUT A SAVED BABY IN SCHWABACH IN THE 60’S I HAVE BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL THE LAST 3 MONTH’S READY TO GO AT IT AGAIN JUST GIVE ME A NAME.Fred Barry Nelson: Tim J–and anyone else who’s interested: I heard from Stephanie Engalage and “Engalage” is indeed her maiden name. It’s amazing that no one seems to recall the incident of an American soldier reviving a German baby with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in March 1968. Regards to all. |

I decided to walk up Henke to the corner with Schilling str. which was located across the street from Gate 2. As I stood there by myself and looked across and saw nothing but a line of building that were evidently owned by Siemens Corp. There was visual boundary or anything that could be recognized as to where the Gate 2 had been located. As I turned to walk backdown Henke I tried so hard to visualize what it had looked like back in 1957 compared to ‘o7..I guess they call the difference progress, but one thing it can’t change is my meory of that little city over 50yrs. ago.Karen Vinion: Hi Richard..know what you mean, I felt the same way when I there.(07) Daughter and I are going back in Dec.,CAN’T WAIT!! | 745) S,C | After waiting these many months and all the forms and trips back and forth to the VA and money spent on exams, etc. Here is the result from the VA. The said,”We have exhausted all efforts, but cannot find my records”. They said that they must have burned in a fire at the Archives around 1970. I went to the court house today and talked to the Va, They have nothing to construct my record. I informed them that I was in the Nurnberg Hospital station 16(when I was there)and later I understand it was station 21. I am being asked if I can find these things: 1, Picture of the hospital with the name on a sign for instance. 2. A copy of a birth certificate(block out the name)with name of the hospital. 3. Specific date as to when the hospital closed. Right now they are telling me that they don’t know if Nurnberg hospital ever existed and right now they don’t believe I was ever a patient there for two months or not? It hurts my feeling that I have to resort to ask for your help, but I have no other recourse at this time. Is there anyone else out there who have been told there records were lost, mostly because of a fire? Please email me if you have or will share some information with me.Alan M. Stubbs: Richard, go to this site’s main page, scroll down to pictures – then to Nurnberg and click on it, then there is a list of different locations in Nurnberg, click on Nurnberg Hospital=there are some good pictures of the hospital which I should think would help. I wish I could help more! Best of luck!!!Richard Reed: Hi Alan: How have you been? Thank you very much for the info. I now have pictures and the date of June ’94 when it closed. I appreciate all the help.Cherie: Hi Richard, what VA are you at? They are giving you a run-around and I find that disgraceful. Please contact the main VA hospital in DC. Just go to the VA website for the address and phone number. The medical records at Nurnberg American Hospital did not get burned! My sister was born there in 1970 and we were still able to get the records. Good luck. |

I remember hearing of it, but after all of these yrs. I forgot. I do remember Merrill Barracks was in Nurnberg. I frequently got to Furth and during my tenure the 8th Div. was there.Duefaums: eh.. funny ..weenty: â êîíöå êîíöîâ: îòëè÷íî!! à82÷Kelly Madison Squirts: well.. it’s like I knew! |
| 737) Tunas, MO | Hi SFC Price, I was with B 1/46 from June’77 to Aug’79. I started out in 1st Platoon. I believe you were a squad leader then and Sgt. Nance was the Platoon Sgt then. Cpt Brown was the Company Commander. I recall what the 1st Sgt looked like but I can’t remember his name! I remember SFC Houston, SFC McHarq<sp> SSG Henderson, SSG Knight, SSG Amons<sp> and SGT Gurley. I had SGT Richards as my squad leader in both 1st platoon and later in 3rd platoon. He was good, I really respected him. Anyway good to see someone from B 1/46 posting here. Hope you’re doing well. Regards, SP4 Rick DePuePaul Price: I was in 1st Plt as a sgd ldr. I remember SSg Nance, Sfc Houston, Sfc McHarg, SSG Henderson, SSG Knight, SSG Amons, SFC Stone & SSG Smith.Later was Plt Sgt & also was in TOW section for a bit. Also spent a bit of time in CSC with the Scouts. was one that taught the Dragon training.Rick DePue: Hi SFC Price, I’ve remembered a few more names since my first reply. SFC Dupre in CS PLT. SSG Hanson in 2nd PLT. I believe 2LT Lara as the PLT leader for 1st PLT. I think 2LT Califf<sp> was the 2nd PLT leader. Do you remember the APC that caught fire(heater) from 2nd Platoon during one of the field exercises? I remember the rumour was that 2LT Califf’s career was finished because of that fire. What a shame, he was a good guy. In 3rd PLT we had 2LT Harner as our PLT leader. T remember the XO was a good officer but I can’t remember his name either. Do you remember CPT Brown, the Company CO?? he was a helcopter pilot in Vietnam. The Battalion CO was LTC Meloy, if I remember right. I like to say I remember SFC Stone and SSG Smith but I really can’t say I do. What platoons were they assigned to? Do you remember a SGT Ethington<sp> who worked in HQ Platoon? I remember the armorer was a big guy with blonde hair who was never satisfied with how clean your weapon was. When did you go to CSC Co?? We shared the barracks with them. Didn’t they also have some of the barracks behind us with C Co?? Boy it’s tough to remember what was what, after all these years!! 😀 Regards, RickPaul Price: I remember Lt Laura, SFC Stone was Plt Sgt, SSG Smith was Sqd Ldr. I remember Cpt Brown then Cpt Doy took over as CO Co B. |
| 736) Undermyhat, AZ-CA | Let not complain to much about this website, It’s the best one going. Good Job, General Ed. Us old timers haven’t much to say since we been around since the origin of dirt. | 735) South Carolina | Richard thank you for posting this information,if anyone likes to see the picture I can send them a copy. It would be nice if Eddie could post it on the Ferris Barracks website? I would like to write to the city of Erlangen and let them know how I feel about this. What about your guy’s out-there?Alan M. Stubbs: If you want to see a picture of the memorial go to Ferris Barracks members, then photos, then to Erlangen Oct. 2008. I posted a picture of it there in October. What a shame, it happens here in America too. They are all idiots! |

| 733) South Carolina | Lets get the interest back in again. What do you think: Karin, Dirndl, Bill, etc.?Alan M. Stubbs: Too many changes for everyone I think. Plus when we were told this site was going to be shut down and we had to transfer to the new site and yet it never happened. Easy to loose your following when that stuff happens. I still check it every day and comment from time to time. It’s pretty sad though!Richard: Hey Alan Stubbs, send me an email if you would like. Sounds like you and I may have served around the same time.Eddie: This site was never closing down. MSN was closing all their groups and we had a group started on MSN. Multiply took over all MSN Groups, so we got switched over to Multiply. MSN, Yahoo and Multiply are all groups once started run on their own. Ferris Barracks at http://www.ferrisbarracks.com is the only Ferris Barracks website. All the rest are groups. The Multiply Group took the place of the Ferris Barracks Roster. Everyone can join the group and it’s like putting your name on the roster, but a lot better because everyone has their own page to enter anything they like. No one has to mail me their photos because everyone has their own place to put the photos and run their own blog.Alan M. Stubbs: Thanks for the info. Eddie, NOW I understand! Richard, I’ll email you this weekend.Dirndl: Hi Richard how are things going. Not much here.Seen the pix when Karin and Tim`s visited to your house.Nice place you got. |

| 703) – | I found posts from some 1-35 guys: Ted Saavedra, post 403; Earl Mensch, post 246; and Mike Curl, post 214. I have a little info on some others: Bob Harn retired as CSM a couple years ago and lives in Colorado Springs (his unit in Desert Storm is written up in the book “the Boys of Company C” – he was 1SG). Don Loop (I ran into him again at Fort Lewis) lives in Elmira NY. Bob Edwards got out of the army but then got back in. Dave Harley I haven’t heard from since 2006 but he was still in Wyoming at the time. Chapman was living just outside Seattle. That’s about all I know. The only post from 2-37, 3-34 guys that I saw was from Tony Wade, post 11. I was in A Co with him. Bn Cdr Larry Smith made BG and retired. Jim Connely retired and lives in Leavenworth. I was in Erlangen in May 2008. I went to visit my daughter who is a nun and was spending a year at her order’s convent in Breuberg. We went for several day trips, including back to Erlangen. It was the first time I’ve been back. What a rush! We had a great time! I guess I’m getting older but the memories stay young. Those were wild and crazy years and I wouldn’t exchange them for anything.Bill Conner: Hey Steve: Were you in B or C co 1/35. I remember your name not your face. Do you remember SSG Christopher, he was in C co. I was in A co, I went by the name Moose. Was there from Nov 75 to Jan 78. |
