  3. Great day all!

I am new the the site and really enjoy it so far. I am going to start posting some info later.

    I am a US Army Retired NCO I served from 07 1977 – 07 1995.

I had the pleasure of being one of the few Army soldiers assigned to 7 Army CATC at Vilsek Logistics Division up on the hill. I remember I was the only 63B10 mechanics there working along side the German Mechanics on the M115 Jeeps and tried my best to get them stuck in the mud and snow! Never Happened! LOL! and the original M88 gas engine vehicles… I was part of the group to build the Graf racetrack. And we used the abandoned vehicles to run! what a memory..

I was a 2/81 Armored Bn “Red Lion” in Erlangen Germany in the early ’80’s! with the M60’s Remember the original “REFORGER” Training Exercises with the Cobras’ hovering around? And we tore up plenty of forest and cobblestone roads as well! Convoying to gunnery to Graf and then to Hoenfels on the autobhan! And being able to drink 2 beers at lunch that was authorized!

Alot of memories. Now I have a place to write about them.

I was a Cavalry troop mechanic in Fox Troop 2/2 ACR in Bamberg went on border missions “TOUJOURS PRET! “Always Ready” The Battle Of 73 Easting !

Had Drill Sergeant assignment at the School of Hard Knox! at Ft Knox Ky The last and final class before it was closed.

NETT assignment for the M@/M3 Bradley to CONS units at Ft Stewart, GA, Ft. Bliss, TX and NTC Ft Irwin!

2 tours in Korea at Camp Howze.1/31 Inf “Last of the Legionnaires” and 1/9 Manchu Warrior at Camp Hovey ,backside of TDC!

I retired in 1997 at Ft Lewis, WA to complete my time!

Whew..and now I am a +25 year military defense contractor with alot of memories and experiences to also share later on.

Almost ready to fully retire from my military dedication to the “WARFIGHTER” worldwide.

Thabnks for the forum to write in.

Take care and until next time

  4. Spec 4 kammerdiener, Robert c,

I was stationed there from march 1979 to 1981 Sept took my leave in accordance to ets

Was supose to be promoted to e 5 working in the communications center but we just got a new Sgt from England Sgt lindenmeyer who stuck my promotion papers in his desk and held them back.as I was about to re enlist he pulled them out and said if you re enlist I will turn this in. I said they were supose to of been turned in 6 month ago

He just smiled. So I called the reenlistment recruiter and told him to tear up my re enlistment papers and put in leave days in accordance to ets and got it my next duty station would of been Japan. I enjoyed being there before that

Our communication center had a 99.99% up time in the years I was there before he came and until I left. Not sure what happened after that. I often got a call from the communication center from lyndenmeyer when they had problems. I loved going down town being it was in walking distance. When I first got there the hhb 210th fa wore a vii corps patch which changed to the cannon and two Cresent moons. The bowling ally had good food . I was one of the first to get the message the Iran embacy was taken from their communications center and as the troops came to our base to do their training for hostage rescue ( special forces) I delivered their messages to them at the gym where they were bunked down and making preparations to save the Iran hostages. Herzo played a very important part of that. Every body that knew me called me kamm. I loved germany. Wish I could go back and visit.

we also some times delivered classified messages to William odarby kensern to their communication center once in a while. I often volunteer to be an aggressor against 3/37th fa, 2/377fa 2/28fa and the 2/317 fa during field exercises Sgt white and Sgt cook lead us a couple of times as aggressor team . 5 of us. Guy claypool and I was often on the aggressor team. If you ended up scorn I am sorry we were just following our orders.

  5. Herzogenaurach, W. Germany (Herzo Base USASA Field Station 16) from March 1970 – May 1972. (98C) I spent most of my time assigned to the Herzo Base Friewillage Feierwehr. Of course, my MOS was my primary job, I was really happy to be in Germany. What a beautiful country and great people! I lost track of all the buddies I had over there. I also had a friend “Andy” that made the pizza at the EM club. He was a civilian from Herzo and had me to dinner with his family.

    1. Sorry I didn’t leave my name and rank in my Herzo post. Fred Nesbitt, SP4, USASA Herzo Base, W. Germany (for all those out there who like to correct people’s posts- I know Germany is now a unified country, but back in 1970 it was two separate countries!)

    2. Fred, My father was SFC William “Bill” Hendrix. We were in Herzo the same time as you. My father’s part-time gig was managing the movie theatre. Any chance you remember him?

  6. I’m looking for anyone who might have known my uncle, PFC Davis Harold Dobson, who was killed on 28 July 1964 near Gersthofen, West Germany, in a crash of his aircraft, an OV-1C Mohawk, from Co B, 3D AVN of the 3rdID. He was the AO (aerial observer). His aircraft had flown from Kitzingen (where he was stationed, I’m assuming at Harvey Barracks) to Gablingen AAF to rehearse for a demonstration of IR detection equipment for the West German Army. They crashed and exploded near Gersthofen while returning to base at Kitzingen. Both he and the pilot, 1 LT Walton P. Waller, were killed. As was, unfortunately, a fairly common failure of the aircraft in its early years, an engine shut down (I believe during or shortly after takeoff); the pilot ordered my uncle to eject, but the plane simultaneously rolled, and my uncle’s chute did not have time to open, and he was killed upon impact with the ground. Waller stayed with the plane and was also killed.

There is a memorial page with his photo here (scroll down to July 1964):

  7. Was anyone at the 198 PSC Ludwigsburg Comp Team, “Flak Kaserne” from 1980-1984? Would love to hear from you. Sp4 Marrero, Catherine cathotero@bex.net

  8. Hello everyone! I was stationed in Herzo 5/83-5/86, assigned to 2/377 FA (Lance) – still with me many fond memories of my time in Herzo.

    A. Acevedo

  9. I was stationed at Herzo base for most of 1972. My unit – A TAB, 25th Artillery – was moved to Herzo from Warner Barracks, Bamberg in late 1971. the Met section leader was E7 Gene Acke. When we arrived, the base was in bad shape and we spent most of the winter remodeling our working buildings and the motor pool. I lived off-base with my wife and infant son. After the big city of Bamberg, the town on Herzo was just larger than a village with very little night life. The only attraction on base was the photo “club”, actually the only specialty camera and photo equipment store in region.

I went back to Herzo a few years ago to see the base redevelopment into Addidas world headquarters creating a beautiful campus.

  10. Wow, so glad I stumbled on this site! I was stationed at AK from Jan ’82 (just in time for Wintex ’82) till June of ’84 Participated in Operation Able Archer ’83 and spent 3 summers at Camp Redleg. Such fond memories of my time there although sometimes it wasn’t the easiest job being out in the field, but would do it all over again if given the choice. Still remember “Squeaky” the base barber saying “You wanna blocked oder tapered?” Saw “E.T. The Extraterrestrial” at the base theater, and enjoyed fried egg and cheese sandwiches at the snack bar.

  11. Hey Mike (Tex), we met at the Ramstein NCO Club in 1994. You worked in EOD and stayed at Kapaun. We had lunch at Burger King. Then, I moved away and we lost touch but I always wondered what happened to you.

  12. Greetings,

I want to Honor my Dad, stationed at Pinder Barracks. Thanks to him, I had the Honor, and best time of my childhood perhaps my life living in Germany as a military dependent. I was very sad to discover Nurnberg American HS closed, so many wonderful memories there.

    Be well my fellow Eagles

  13. I will never forget Harvey Barracks, HHC 2nd Bde 3rd Infantry Division, Dogface Soldier. 1980-1982, Rock Of The Marne. I would love to reconnect with my brothers in arms, I’m sure that many of us is no longer here but never forgotten!💯🙏🏽

  14. We have a million and a half visitors to this site, 5 different Entry Logs with only 552 entries in all total. I guess no one has anything to say.

    1. Regarding the Babenhausen Kaserne; the 14th QM battalion HQ and Company A was also at this kaserne. One of the jobs assigned to me, a Ft Lee QM Heavy Equipment Repairman School grad, was repairing typewriters. Remember them? Great place to serve 62- 63.
