Days before the computer as cell phone. Everything went through the COMCENTER. I stayed in the barracks (very last one on the main drag. Man did we have a great NCO Clubs, and happy hour beers were .40c. Anyone ever reads this and was stationed there during this time period, feel free to chat at instant mess fb WOODY KENNY or email me at draydoowph@gmail.com Stay blessed

  6. I was at BISMARCK KASERNE from late August 1973 until December 16, 1974. I was in the Army for 1 year 11 months and 6 days per my DD-214 Form. Since the Vietnam war had ended I ended up getting a Christmas drop…that is why my active duty was a little less than the required 2 years. My DD-214 form list my MOS as 21G20 Pershing Maintenance…my actual duty was Programmable Test Station (PTS) operator…often referred to as a “Box” operator. I was in D Battery, 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery. Every three months or so we took our Pershing 1a missiles to the Bottingen live missile site. We actually fired one at White Sands missile range near El Paso, TX. I remember I was the last guy into the bunker just before the missile was launched…and I just backed up a few steps out of the bunker to actually see the missile launch…it was really pretty cool…real rocket launch…pretty amazing technology and power.

Anyway, have many fond memories of Bismark and Germany…it was good duty…and I met I bunch really interesting dudes. One of my better friends was a guy named Ernie Hemmingway…he claimed his uncle was Earnest Hemmingway. I remember one snowy night Ernie and I were in a convoy going from the Bottingen missile site back to Schwabish Gmund. Ernie was driving the missile launcher that had a Pershing missile on it (minus the warhead) and I was riding shot gun…we were passing over a levy…when all of sudden the guy driving the launcher in front of us drove smooth off the levy…the launcher rolled once or twice and came to stop…fortunately no one was hurt badly…but sure it was pretty embarrassing for the sergeant driving the launcher.

This website brings back a lot of memories and stories of my time in the Army when I was 22 and 23 years old. When I first joined the Army and was in basic training (Fort Polk) I thought I was going to Vietnam, however during basic training a drill sergeant announced one day that the Army was no longer sending troops to Vietnam…so we didn’t go through what was called “biv-wack” or something like that where troops go out into the field for a week or so and practice being soldiers. Anyway, I was glad I missed going to Vietnam and have always respected those who served in Vietnam. One of my best friends in high school went to Vietnam as a “grunt”…it did not sound like much fun…he survived and came out OK…did OK in life…but I think it had a lasting effect.
