  1. I was electronics repairman stationed in
HQ company 1967 to 1969. I lived off post
in high rise apartments in Erlangen with
my new bride at the time (July 1967)
Finding this site was the highlight of my
day. Keep up the good work

    1. I was stationed on the Czech border on a mountain called Schneeberg. I arrived in a snowstorm in January 1966. Being from Wisconsin, guess who got to shovel. When I got there it was Det J 318th USASA Battalion. Then someone in Washington didn’t like that so it changed to Det J Co A, 16th Field Station. Being that Herzo Base was our headquarters, I made many a trip down the A9 autobahn to get there. I spent 3 years up there on the mountain. The buildings were demolished in 2003 (10 years after the Americans pulled out). The spring of 2019, I was back there for our 50 anniversary. I walked up the hill, thought I was going to die climbing that 18% grade. I met a German woman from Berlin on a blind date set up by the German Bunderswehr. She came with me to the states and began teaching German in school. Her degree was in business admin, not teaching. The Principal said “Don’t worry about it, we want your language skills”. She retired after 32 years. When her former students see her anywhere on the street, in the mall, or wherever, it’s always “Frau Miske”. Sadly, the guys in Sig maintenance are dying off one by one. One of the last ones died last year. I couldn’t go to the funeral because I was in the hospital with Covid.
I’m glad I ran into this site

  2. Hi, I was wondering if anyone remembers Gisbert Karl Metzig. He was stationed in the Army as an SP4 in Feucht or Nuernberg in the late 50’s. He died in 1960. I was two when he died; I never knew him. Is there anyone out there that remembers him? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I lived in Feucht until 1974; I actually met some guys that were stationed there in the early 70’s. One of them was David, just can’t remember his last name. We used to go partying at this one popular club, just can’t remember the name of that either. Thank you and bye!

  8. Back in 1951-53, I was an Army brat living in Erlangen. This was before they built dependent housing, so our family lived at 8 Atzelsberger Steige, west of Strawberry Hill. The neighborhood had American families scattered throughout it. This was still during the military occupation and the large cities had extensive war damage. I’ve always felt fortunate to have been in Germany at this time and remember it fondly.

    1. I was there 1974-1978. C Company 2/81 Armor. Loved the town of Erlangen. Lived upstairs of the Goldener Hecht. The GI’s called it “The Golden Hex” or sometimes just “The Hex”
