  1. I was there at Merrill… from 1977to 1980… got there as a E1 straight out of AIT… left as a SP4/ AJ on the SP5 list… 182nd Maintenance Company…. Right next to the Chow Hall….across the street from the Bowling Alley… and the Gym…. The only thing I hated… was Graf…..…45 days… it was to dam cold… tanks firing all day and nite… Love NurnBerg

  2. I was in A try 3/17 fdc 81-83 I remember ssg Baptist he once escorted me to jail. He didn’t want to it was just a shit detail he was assigned to do.

  3. I was stationed at Merrell Barracks from ’84 to ’85, when i first got there I was in Air Troop, 2nd ACR then switched to HHT, 2nd CAS, 2nd ACR then into Avum Troop, 2nd CAS, 2nd ACR as the unit changed.

I was a Armt guy on Cobras as a 68M. The new barracks at Feucht were still being built. So it was the transition room on the 4th floor at Merrell to another room on the forth floor A425, with the upper windows facing the quad. Later i moved down to the 3rd floor A310, with the windows facing the HQ wing of the squadron where the CSM and Col. Crouch offices were. HHT for 2nd ACR was below me.

There was a stairwell with a plywood wall blocking off the stairs. But, it could be climbed around, a great was to get off the Air and Cat Troop’s floors with out the CQ on the third floor entrance area finding out someone left.

Went on many alerts and a couple of Reforgers, spending time at Graf and Hornfels, never got to Wildflecken. I got to the unit when they were deployed to Holland (i think it was Holland – maybe Denmark).

The Air Troop Commander was Maj. Gunn then we got a Maj O’Toole, I liked Maj. Gunn as the commander. When we switched to Avum Troop the commander was Cpt. Doyle and 1SG Yoder.

Spent a lot of time in the Rock Haus, a little bit of time the Green Goose, there was another bar called the Twenty Five. So much to remember…

I got to know a lot of people both in the unit, and other units assigned, the 3/5th FA Bn, 84 Engineers, 29 Chemical, 502nd MI CO, 71st Maint Bn for our higher maint for helicopters was the 394th Avn Maint Bn. don’t remember them going to the field for gunnery’s but they had a shop/room in the old hanger and some shop vans outside the hanger doors.

For guard duty I was at the front gate, a rover and spent time at the ammo point.

I remember going up to the break room for payroll and the ice cream machine, there were a couple of video games also one was called Qbert and the other one was Pengo video games. the breakroom was above the TI shop.

across from the Armt/58 phase team shop, there was a shop trailer that had the special tools for the acft

Played football and softball at Soldiers Field, spent time at the two different Rock Haus’, the one upstairs and the one downstairs.

looking for others that spent time there when I was there

  4. CPL Anthony Crump here, hello everyone. I was assigned to 2nd ACR when Col. James Steele was in charge. 1988-1990. Enjoyed Nurnberg. I worked with Col Steel on several field training exercises.

We had formation in a an area called “dragoon square”. We would shout, “If you a’nt Cav, you a’nt sh**”.

Serviced communication cable in what use to be a grooming place for horses during WW2 prior to Military/America occupation. I guess these horses were a part of a parade since Nurnberg was the rallying point for the Germans.

In the building was a door that lead to a stairwell. I went down three levels under ground that lead to a large tunnel that existed into the a place called duzen dikes (runways for aircraft). Eventually these runways were flooded to hide view of runways from above. For planes to land the runways had to been drained. Supplies were brought in and out from airplanes and through tunnels delivered to what was then SS HQ. The tunnels were so big enough to drive Duce & 1/2 through.

I have a lot of pictures I will down load for everyone to view, and a lot more info.

  5. Was there from spring of 69 until September of 71. Loved Germany and surrounding countries. A lot of drugs went through Merrell and like anything else some were singled out and caught the repercussion of others.

    1. Lots of drugs and crazy alcohol-related crazy memories for me. I was there in ’76 and ’77. Lost an eye April 18, 1977 because of it. They just started running “drug dogs” through there about the time I was about to get out. Despite all that, I loved Germany. Beautiful architecture, country, and people—especially the women! Peace, brother . . .

      1. when I was there, they had rats the size of cats hanging around outside between the fence and the bottom floor.

        1. We used to call the guy who set up traps the “rat man.” He used to stake them down so the rats wouldn’t take off with them. I remember one night going out on the town, and a rat was bouncing around in a trap. When I came back hours later, it was still bouncing around. One day he had a bunch of dead ones lined up. He called it a “body count.” There was pizza vendor across the street. The GI’s living in the barracks used to throw the boxes, if you can call them that, out their windows onto the grass on both sides of the main entrance. The rats would drag them under the building. I’m almost 68 and remember that stuff like it was yesterday, haha. Peace, brother . . .

  6. PFC GODFREY I was there as part of the 2nd combat Aviation squadron before we moved to the airbase I can’t remember where from 1985 to 1986 I remember

  7. My name is Grover Watkins. I was at the barracks from 1966 to 1967. MOS 12b2n Atomic Demolition. SSG Harkelroad.

  8. PFC Prinzi. I was in B 3/17, later 3/5 as a 13B from early 1983 to ’85. I remember it well and have told people about the incident. We weren’t far from C battery when it happened. saw pics of it back then, if I remember right it detonated in the end of the tube splitting it and throwing the muzzle brake a ways away. Good thing it was in the tube, can you emagine if it was a split second later outside the tube?

  9. I lost an eye there at 20 years old in 1976. I was an Artillery Surveyor. They knew from what room the glass someone threw that got me came from but never charged anyone. Still can’t believe someone got away with it. If you have any information, I love to hear it.

Still bitter after all these years . . .

  10. I David woods, was the acting first sergeant, for drawdown and return Merrel barracks back to Germany. I and team repaired the jeep out front for Mayor to drive in parade, because my warrent officier, I did not recieve any thing for it. thanks chief.

  11. My name is Bloomingburg…..I was the battalion Legal Clerk for the 3/5th FA, 83-85. Men in my battalion did some crazy stuff. Being the Legal Clerk gave me the ability to get away with all kinds of drunken partying, and other highly wrong stuff. I tried super hard to keep my friends out of trouble, some were a bit too crazy though 🤠🤠🤠🤠. Nuremberg was a great city to party 😜😜😜🤩🤩🤩🤩
